Unhappy Keppra - vomiting once a week

Hi,

I really need your help I keep vomiting since I've been on keppra and have nearly lost a stone of weight I'm nearly down to 7st (thats like going from 112pounds down to almost 100 pounds) Im tiny now its starting to depress me

So I'm on 1000mg of Keppra, 500mg at 8am in the morning and again at 8pm at night since the start of last November.

Aside the very first week I started up till Christmas I had no major side effects, that was 5weeks where I noticed nothing.

But it all changed since Christmas as I have been getting sick. For the last 5weeks in particular either on Wednesday or Thursday, always those exact days, I go to bed around 11pm with bad tummy cramps. I wake up a few hrs later feeling nauseous which lasts about an hr till I end up having to vomit all my dinner out.

(it has also happened on two other occasions at weekends due to very little drinking..but that's another story)

For the following day I feel sick and unable to eat much. Its really bugging me. I have had to miss college as well as working at a creche three times because I felt so bad the day after getting sick.

I went to the doctor the other week and did a urine test that had some blood in it suggesting a kidney infection. She sent it away to the lab to make sure as I'm on the keppra. Well it came back inconclusive so I did a second test and that one then came back clear as in there was no blood that time..and NO i am NOT pregnant either.

The doc and I have no idea whats up and Im gonna see my epilepsy specialist, the guy who put me on keppra, in about a month(the waiting list is HUGE).

Anyone at all experienced something like this?? I cant find answers anywhere

I have problems with nausea on all of the meds I have tried, Keppra included. I have found eliminating certain factors (such as green tea on an empty stomach) helps. I think it is pretty important you take your meds with some sort of food. It would probably absorb better and be easier on your stomach lining.

You should call your doctor and explain what is happening and try to get in sooner! If you can't do that, then go to the emergency room. That is a lot of weight to lose that fast. Also, when you go to bed on Tuesday and Thursday, do you think about having to get up later and be sick? I know that if I get into that type of "routine", then I just make it worse by worrying about it before hand. Try to stay calm and do some breathing excersises. I am by no means saying that you are not truly having an issue, but sometimes it will help me. I wish you the best....keep us informed!

Random,

Nausea and vomiting is so miserable. You must be exhausted.

It's important you get in to see your neurologist FAST. Call and talk to his nurse and see if she can get you worked in sooner. Be sure to emphasize your weight loss, and how much you weigh now.

Did they do a full blood panel? How are your electrolytes doing? Throwing up can get them out of whack and also make you dehydrated, both of which can make you feel even more nauseated.

I felt like you do when I was on Topamax. I didn't want to eat and when I did, I just threw it up anyway. Eventually my doc switched me.

I'm sending positive thoughts your way. Will you let us know how you are doing?
