old documentary, who knows more ?

Hi everyone,

new on the forum, found it using Google when trying to find back something I saw some 15 years ago. It was a documentary on brain surgery, more precisely about severe epileptic patients in the 1970's I think.

If I remember correctly, these patients had such severe epileptic seizures, that they agreed to have experimental surgery performed, during which the left and right half of the brain were severed to prevent the electrical storm to spread out over both halves when a seizure occurred. The surgery was done in the USA. Side effects of the surgery were stunning. Marbles felt and seen were described as cubes if the 'wrong' eye was closed, one hand opened the door when a person wanted to leave and the other hand would immediately shut it, and much more was described.

Back then my interest was more like one of awe and utter surprise about the side effects that were shown. However, I am in the beginning of an experience very similar as the one Eckart Tolle describes in his book "The power of now". This has triggered a great interest in many things, buddhism to start with, but also the working of the brain, how brain often dictates instead of what it should do : support.

Anyway, I have never been able to retrieve the documentary, have written emails with the channels I though may have broadcasted it (Discovery and some others) but no one knows about it. Not even Google seems to help me find it back, although using the proper keywords for this may be hard.

So who recognizes this, and knows what I am looking for ? Any help would be appreciated truly.

Warm regards,
Henk-Jan

PS feel free to ask or comment about other remarks I just made, other than 'just' pointing me to the proper place.

Unfortunately, many of such were "news
articles" and are old. To retrieve such, one
would have to know whom the media / news
affiliates are/were - and if they do/did recollect;
"it may or may not be" possible to dig it up from
the archives - providing if you knew what the
"Subject Title" was.

Unfortunately, a lot of archives do get purged,
then there are such whereas "lawsuits" which
rose up -OR- it was a "error" in publication(s)
and/or the investigation was also erroneous.
In addition, sometimes from Hospitals to People
would "quash" to "expunge" the article from being
published and things get pulled.

Or even more so - in worse case situations,
what was "thought to be so" was not so. {e.g.
via autopsy) All the many reasons why things
vanish over the period of times while some
remains intact.

Hope this helps and sorry this was not of any
benefit for your researching and findings, however
you might be able to find others - when you can.

Many thanks for the elaborate reply. I am still hoping someone has also seen this documentary, and knows more about it. So far I am stunned nothing seems to come up in Google, after all it was extreme surgery and scientific.

Well, wait and see.

Have a great weekend,
Henk-Jan

I don't know the documentary you're searching for, but Oliver Sacks has written several interesting essays about split-brain patients. Also, it's worth viewing Jill Bolte Taylor's amazing talk about her experience of her own stroke. As a neuroscientist, she was able to observe her own stroke as it occurred, and register the changes in "world view" that took place as one half of the brain gave way to the other. It can be viewed at:

Best,

I found a reference to a 1970s TV documentary called "The Mind of Man". It was about split-brain patients operated on by Roger Sperry, and sounds like it the program you saw.

OK, here it is

WITH A DISCLAIMER FOR THE PHOTOSENSITIVE:

At the very beginning of the video, there are a variety of landscapes, some of which present patterns with trees, and lights moving between them which I know set of few of you off--so, PLEASE be careful!!

Thank you, smrman. This is neat.

Also, one other thing to keep in mind. It is entirely done in Spanish. But watching what is done is really COOL.

Well actually thank the person who found the title and doctor ..

By the way, an other way to look at the right / left half and its functions is through Jill Bolte Taylor (youtube with this search will provide the right link).

Much of what she describes matches my recent experiences, except not through a brain hemorrhage fortunately

Love to all,
Henk-Jan

PS can I now use links on this forum, proven a non spammer

No problem, I understand. We had such spammers too where I used to work and let users know they had to wait for their account to be approved even

Thanks so far and have a great week
