Ringing In Ears

Has anyone had this? I just start getting constant ringing in my ears. I dont listen to loud music or go to many concerts and I am relatively young at 41 to get something like this. My internist said my ears looked fine with no signs of infection. I am going to see an ENT this week, but I am on 2000 mg of Keppra and my google search shows that there have been a quite a few people complaining of similar symptoms while on Keppra. Any one else get this?

Ringin'

I am not on Kepra----I take Topirmirax, but I also get ringing in my ears sometimes it last for a while---a minute maybe. It seems my meds makes me sensitive to all sounds? Or it just the seizures effects? (like the buzzing in the light fixtures, etc---the white noise)

I have it and have had for quite some time...in my case it is the lamicatal. Mine is very minor, just a real low key background "white noise" or ringing...its called tinnitus. My fridge is the only thing that makes it wrse, lol. Mine might not bother me because I have low freq. hearing loss though.

I've had ringing in the ears since I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle, which caused TBI and eventually the seizures. That's been about 7 years (I think) and I'm also on Keppra, 2500mg/day.

Do you take asprin frequently? It can cause ringing in the ears.
I get the ringing within an hour of taking gabapentin....it is quite annoying and I just use peaceful music to drown it out.

Hi SunshineArtist,

I hardly take aspirin (although I am supposed to because of high blood pressure).

by any chance have you been sick recently?? or exposed to what may have been strep or a nasty cold? those can cause tinnitus in some people and yet show no typical cold or strep symptoms...
definitely see an ent immediately. ears are nothing to put off seeing a doc for.

Thanks, but I have seen an ENT and they couldn't find anything. This is something I've had for quite sometime. I'm just used to it by now but it is a little aggravating at times.

I think some vitamin deficiencies can cause that symptom as well. Maybe have someone versed in nutrition check you out. Do you know if Keppra can cause any deficiencies?

Mine was Topamax, I think. The longer the time has passed since taking it, the less ringing I have in my ears. Now it's just annoying. I can hear people now.

I have had ringing in the ears since having both ear drums ruptured at six months due t o ear infection. i am also slightly tone deaf and yet I sing bravely disregarding the sensitive ears of those around me!

I used to live in a neighborhood that had a lot of background noise at night. To help sleep I found using a table water fountain to not only cover the noise but the sound of running water to be very relaxing.

I have a CD that is basically 30 minutes of a "babbling brook", similar to the sounds of the table water fountain. I'll often play it over and over in the background while I'm working. It seems to provide the right mix of soothing and stimulating.

I have a clock radio that plays different background sounds when falling asleep, like birds in the woods, rain falling, waterfall, babbling brook, etc. Babbling brook is my favorite.

I'm happy to say that my ear ringing isn't permanent. An ENT says I have some hearing loss, but it's not bad. And that the ear ringing may continue to get better. It's possible (probable) given the timing when it arrived then started getting better that it was due
to Topamax. I'm off that stuff now.

Unhappy Thanks everyone

I hoep to see the docs next week. Wish I know what was causing this as I dont listen to loud music often, usually the speakers on the laptop. I hope I dont have any hearing loss. I havent heard Keppra doing this.

Right now I have Pandora playing some ambient music so I can fall asleep at night and the ringing really drives me crazy.

trilepdad,
I too have had the ringing, along with a full, muffled and echo feeling ear. I do not know what causes it. I have been to the ENT, no wax, no fluid, and my hearing was within normal limits.

It has happened 3 times in the last four months, the first two times just for a day or two and the last time it was for about two weeks. It was crazy, a high pitched echo when ever I talked or anyone else talked. I am left with the constant ringing now.

I am diagnosed with MS, migraines and possible seizures. I think it all must be related somehow.

I hope you can find some relief, I know how bothesome it can be.

My son (diagnosed 3 years ago, 22 years old) suffers from ringing in his ears too. Usually it is only one ear - but on occasion both ears ring. The ringing actually shows up on his EEG's as seizure activity. He will also suffer from his arm/hand tingling when ever the ear ringing happens too. Not sure if this is helpful info, but it may be something to consider.

Thanks. I went to the ENT today, i got the same results you did. I see one of my neurologist's Friday so maybe this is seizure activity as my keppra was reduced to from 3000mg to 2000mg 6 months ago.

Doc said it could be stress too, (which I have a ton of right now). I see another ENT specialist in 2 weeks at a tinitus institute at Univ. CA Irvine so I may see a better doc than the one I saw today.

I do say it is VERY annoying.
