Was this a seizure? Opinions please.

I'm new to posting here but I've been reading the forums for about a month. Something happened last night that I'm wondering about and would like some input on.

I was printing off some info(actually from a link on this site)last night about 10:45. All of a sudden, I heard the sound of a street sweeper. For some reason I thought it was my second computer or its printer, so I checked it out. I was able to determine that the sound was not coming from there, but the sound itself did not stop.

About this time, my husband called to say goodnight. I heard him ask if I was ready for bed, then he complained about some work related stuff, then he made a comment about his ranting. I remember chuckling at this. The next thing I remember is hearing the sound of his voice but not being able to understand him at all. All this took place in a couple of minutes. He says that I was laughing, a lot. I don't remember laughing except for the chuckle. Was this a seizure?

Just a little background. I am 60, I've had seizures off and on since I was in my early 20s. I have run the gamut on seizure medications; nothing has helped. I am currently off all meds(have been for a year and a half)and I'm trying the GARDiet that I found info on on this website. Although my seizures have become more pronounced over the last ten years, I go through periods of no seizures and then a spurt of them. Last year, I had several seizures a day, drop seizures, reflex seizures. The doctors(neurologists)have labeled my seizures as pseudoseizures. They have never given me a clear-cut kind of seizure that I have except for that. I have looked at the descriptions of the different kind of seizures, and frankly, I could see myself in almost all of them over the past ten years.

I began to wonder if last night's event may have been a stroke. I googled that, and I don't think so. So, what is your opinion. All thoughts welcomed.

Hi Molly, welcome to the forum.

What you described certainly fits the description of a simple partial seizure (auditory hallucination) followed by a complex partial seizure (laughing with loss of consciousness).

Hi Molly,
I want to welcome you to the group.

Seizures are so varied, it certainly might have been.
Have you seen a reduction while being on the GARD?

I've only tried the GARD for a couple of weeks. What sent me to it was an absolutely horrible April between allergies and seizures. My doc and I are extremely vigilant about any meds I use for allergies so I am fairly assured that the rash of seizures(daily)for 2 weeks in April were not a reaction to the meds. I posted on another forum(not epilepsy related)how frustrated I was and someone kindly directed me here.
I have thought for about the last year that there is a connection between my stomach and my full blown seizures. That's why I decided to give the GARD a try. My doctor wanted me on the Ketosis Diet when he took me off my meds altogether, but I felt worse on it, and had constant seizures(several a day)while I tried it.
For right now, last night's episode was the first in a week so I'm back to what is normal for me(about one a week, sometimes two). I know I feel better on the GARD even if it doesn't help the seizures.

This is interesting, I hope you keep us updated.
Have you been tested for celiac disease? I also think there is an intestinal issue with my daughter as well. We also follow the GARD diet, but unfortunately she has many infractions. The worst of which is her dad that thinks a little bit here and there is okay.

I am glad that you feel better. Perhaps try to cut out grains altogether for a while and see if it is helpful. It might help to heal the intestinal issues.

Rebecca is med free too, and it has been a huge relief to see her seizures continue to reduce in number.

Nope, haven't been tested for celiac disease, although from reading the GARD essays, I kinda understand what it's about. What disturbed me in reading about celiac disease was the subject of anemia. I had a full blood panel done back in March and the only thing that was noted(besides the ever-present cholestral problems)was that the hemocrit level(is that right?)was a tad low. I've never had that problem. Of course I googled the test and it is for detecting anemia besides other things. That did not make me a happy camper!
