Apology

I just wanted to apologise on behalf of all Canadians, in particular all those in Vancouver for the EMBARRASING display of poor sportsmanship over the Stanley Cup loss to the Boston Bruins.

The team should be embarrased, both Canuks and Bruins (as most players on the bruins are canadian) This is not what we are about. Vancouver started riots in 1994 when they lost to the new york rangers, then showed how much they grew up when it came time for the Winter Olympics. Now they showed that they are still brats.

Terribly sorry to all Americans, All Bruin Fans and All Hockey fans. This has made me embarrased to say I am a Canuks fan.

I, Rae Metcalfe, as a super awesome Manitoban vow, that when Winnipeg makes the Stanley Cup final (and we will) that win or lose I will not riot.

As a Bruins fan, I accept your apology, and I will hold you to your vow when Winnipeg makes the finals...

Thanks Rae, for the apology. IMO, those that play hockey are brats. Why is it that so many times during games, the players lose their tempers and end up fighting in the hockey rink? And now that they lost to Boston they riot in Vancouver. Grow up, hockey players!!

This is why I don't go to hockey games anymore!

After living in Vancouver I have to say I didn't like it because I saw a lot of this behaviour but I can vouch that it wasn't the sports fans who were like that & I don't even follow sports.

There are a few people who like to provoke such behaviour. Even when I lived there I remember people were asked to go home after big events downtown to prevent these problems and I think the locals are now getting rather sick of it.

Actually some Vancouverites set up a facebook page to get people to help clean up the mess. The friend of the person I"m on vacation with went to help at 9:30 in the morning & they were told to go home because so many people showed up & everything was already done.
Vancouver riot clean up brings city back together

There is another facebook site set up so that people can post photos of the troublemakers & others can identify them and I tend to think that shows how the riot doesn't reflect the majority of people in Van.

Because it makes money. Its considered entertainment to watch people beat each other up (why else would UFC be so popular) I for one think its barbaric. I used to play hockey and the only time I ever checked a person into the boards, my stick when through the cage of his mask and busted his eye socket. I cried so hard and quit hockey after that. Its not fun when people hurt by accident, let alone on purpose.

The hockey players are so talented, I hate it when they resort to violence to sell the sport. The head and neck injuries make me cringe.

I agree. I hate watching the head injuries. That hit on horton, when you slow down the video, he is clearly in the middle of a seizure. His arms are above his head and he is shaking, they zoomed in on his face and his eyes are rolled back and he is twiching. Poor guy.

Yet there no mention of it in the papers of how obviously the hit caused a seizure.

I don't think all of the Canucks fans are guilty of causing this riot. The people that incited the riot were a small group, planning all of this out before hand, whether Vancouver lost or won. It's not fair to all of the legitimate fans as the jerks who planned the riot cannot be called real fans.

I think it's a bit harsh to call all hockey players brats. There are plenty of unsportsmanlike players, but you'll find that in every sport. There are also plenty of classy players that play the game right.

Granted though, the injuries seen in hockey are just worse than most other sports, due to the speed and strength of the players, and the equipment they wear. Head shots are cheap and should receive much harsher penalties than they currently do. I think if someone is injured by intent, then the suspension should be the same length of time that the injured player is out.

But American Football is in the same boat, there have been plenty of awful injuries there as well.

I think in the case of these two sports, the injuries may be worse because of the amount of equipment and protection the players wear. Maybe it gives them a false sense of protection. You don't see these kind of injuries in Aussie Rules or Rugby.

Also Rae.. if the Jets make it to the finals I won't riot either. But by the time they reach the finals, we'll be too old to get up.

RE: hit causing seizure

I just watched the clip again, and I see what you mean. The sportscaster I heard said "he wants to get up, but they're not letting him". Umm, no. He is seizing and they are holding him down. It's almost like they were trying to cover it up. Hope he's okay.

Yup, totally wrong for seizure first aid. although he does have razor sharp blades attached to his feet.

I think it is barbaric, too. And that is why I hate boxing, wrestling, etc. All so barbaric, IMO. All has to do with a male ego. Just my .

Google "spear tackle" in Rugby. Guaranteed to break a neck, and has been banned; however, it still occurs.

I'm an Aussie Rules fan, myself (and cricket in summer). I know our sports are trying to bring OHSW more to the fore, but some of these morons just don't "get it". Like so many young people who think they are indestructible themselves, they also don't realise they can permanently damage someone else with their actions.

Even hearing Mohammed Ali slur through a speech isn't enough to convince them boxing can cause brain damage. Oh, that's right, he has a disease. *cough*not caused by boxing*cough*
