Field trip ideas?

I homeschool my 10 year old and I wanted to start off the year with a really fun field trip. Any ideas? What field trips do you remember when you were a kid? I remember going to see a bee keeper and getting a taste of honey with the honey comb. What do you remember doing?

I remember going to the State Captiol building, going to a local farm, going to some local walking trails as well as going to a symphony concert.
While at the school for the blind, we went to the top of a Mountain but it took a lot of walking to get up to the top. Its for tourists but its nice to be able to discover something nature created thats still here.

There was

this really cool museum, the Center of Science & Industry. THAT was a blast. The things we got to do, and learned that day were so much fun, my Girl Scout troop ended up going back for a camp-in. THAT was even better.....

When I was young

Many many moons ago, we got one field trip to the police station (they let us in the paddy wagon) and another trip to the fire-hall.

Get a book that shows different types of bugs, then go on a walk through the woods, ticking off each type you find. Kids LOVE bug hunts! You can do that with types of trees and wildflowers as well. Only costs the price of the book.

I posted yesterday??!! I don't recall turning the computer on!! Had a bad few days with my seizures, but reading it back, it looks like a good idea lol! Now why didn't I think of that one...... More ideas from my brain now it seems to be firing on a few more cylinders rather than just one! Are there any old buildings locally, you can give a good history lesson looking at old buildings, talking about what you all think the occupants would have been wearing, and eating, and lighting their house with. And if you draw a picture of the building, that covers art as well. Bake cakes with your child then take them to an old person's care home. The child will learn about giving back to the community, cheer up someone's day, and cookery all in one go. Churches, synagogues, temples and other religious buildings are often very decorative, and it sparks discussions about different religions which covers Religious Education. Going around your area with plain paper and crayons and taking rubbings of ANYTHING i.e drain covers, leaves, railings, trees, bricks, just about anything is fun, and you can incorporate a lesson on materials in your environment (science). If there are any aquariums near you, most kids love seeing the fish. I will be back with more ideas when I've racked my brains for other stuff I've done with my kids. OH a port watching the container ships coming in-teaches them about imports and exports, which can lead to discussions on WHY a country imports and exports, and what kids don't like watching boats?

I just found out my job is sending me about 60 miles from home (oh, the gas!!) and the town has a large dam. It also has a story about a local UFO. I think I'll take my daughter with me. Maybe we'll see the UFO, you think? You know, I'll take a camera just in case. I've also thought of a writing project. Every few days I'm going to have her interview her grandmother and listen to her memories about whatever she wants to talk about, then write a creative story using that material. I think these would make a good book to share with her later and certainly a good memory for my daughter.

Some places for school field trips in grammar / elementary school:

Police or Fire Department
Local farm or Orchards (Apples or Maple Syrup)
Bee Keepers
Zoo or Petting Zoo
Museum
Theater (for a show)
Historical City Tours
Erie Canal boat tour
Caves
Indian Reservation

You should also check with the local schools. See where they take their children on class trips.

I wanted to share with you the story my mother shared with my daughter for her "memory" writing assignment. It is really a good story. I hope you like it.

Christmas Morning
By Grandma

One Christmas morning my parents waked me up and it was still dark and cold. We dressed fast and got into our car and we started on our trip to my Grandmothers for Christmas. There was a loud pop and the car slid and stopped because we had a flat tire. My father had to change the flat tire then we continued our trip to Grandma. Soon there was another pop and it was another flat tire so once again my Father went to change the flat tire once again. After that we continued to move on and then again another pop so it probably was the tire so Father changed and then we went to Grandmas. My mother started the flat tires and the total was 8. We were very happy when we finally got to Grandmother’s house.

The End

Sounds like trips I've had!

At school here (elementary) the students look forward visiting the Pumpkin Patch. Picking one and carving (w/the help of an adult is great fun.

It's ready to sit outside and welcome the "goblins".

Watching the news yesterday they mentioned the mint.

It reminded me how as a kid we were all taken there to see how money was made, then I thought of mentioning it here.

It is fall now - obviously you need to go to a pumpkin patch.

By the way, a new world record pumpkin was weighed in at 1725 pounds. This was in the great sate of Ohio, though not from my patch.
