Had a EGD (upper endoscopy) today

I went in early this morning to get a EGD done today. I was so nervous going in to get this done! I had to be at the hospital at 6:30am, and the procedure was done at 7:30am. They gave me some great medication to knock me out! Turned out, my esophagus is irritated, and my dr showed me pictures of it. I wasnt allowed to eat anything after midnight last night, and when they did the procedure they found food in my stomach! 10 hours after I last had anything to eat! ( i ate a snack at 10pm the night before). So, the doctor said he wants me to have a Gastric Emptying Study on January 3rd. They want to see if there is a problem with my stomach and why the food was still there after so many hours. They did take a biopsy of my esophugus. Just standard procedure when they see a irritated esophugus. The dr said he wasnt at all concerned, just said its routine to do that.

I was so tired this morning! I think I might have got around 4 hours of sleep last night. Then on top of the sedation they gave me, i was so out of it afterwords. I was told I couldnt drive, cook or do anything at all today. They ordered me to go home, sleep, rest, and get lots of fluids in me. So thats what Ive been doing today.

Well you certainly have had your hands full Kristin (in addition to your little ones).
Sounds like there are some answers somewhere here to much bigger medical issues.

While you are resting might I suggest that you do some research on enzymes and probiotics.

Take care of yourself.

Did your Dr. stretch your esophagus while he was doing EGD?

I had my esophagus stretched a few years ago due to the same things that your going through.

This also helped me with heartburn.

He didnt say if he stretched it or not. He just brought up the fact that I still had food in my stomach, when after 10 hours without eating, there shouldnt be any food in there. So I go back in a couple of days to get another test done.

I too had food in my stomach after a long period of time with no eating.

I hope your Dr. finds what you are needing and that you will feel better. I honestly don't how you handle things with having children.

You are truely blessed.

Did you ever find out why there was food in the stomach after so many hours? I just want to make sure its nothing serious and hopefully this test I will be doing tuesday morning gives me more answers. To be honest, there are days where I have to ask myself how I handle everything with three little ones! Thankfully I have a wonderful husband (well at times he can be.... ) who helps. Even though half the time I feel like Im the one doing all the work, housework and kids, that is! I feel very blessed that god has given me three beautiful little boys. 12 years ago doctors told me I never would be able to have kids of my own. I proved them wrong!

I wish I could remember, I was told that I was having spasms of my esophagus.

I was told that my esophagus could need strecthing again years down the road.

It was a few months after I had a gallbladder attach and that had to be removed. Since then I have not any more problems with my esop.

I was told by my Dr. when I was diag. that I shouldn't have children. I was 19 years old at that time, so I had my tubes tied. Now at the age of 59 my husband and myself wish so badly we had children and grandchildren. We will soon be married 41 years.

I had my gallbladder removed in May 2006. They removed 12 huge gall stones, and my gall bladder. I was having sharp pains in my gallbladder before getting it removed, but after it was removed, it all went away. This pain I experienced, started in July of this year, and got so bad, I ended up in the ER close to a week after it started, I thought something was wrong with my heart, since it was on the left side that I was having the pain. But after having a stress test, my heart checked out fine. So now were looking at the issues with the GI Dr. I was told I couldnt have kids due to the PCOS. But after being on the glucophage xr for over three years, it helped regulate my cycles and we have three beautiful little boys.

my dr. presc. hyomax-SL --Which is a tablet to place under my tongue twice a day to help in my epoh. spasms. I have only used 4 of these. The pain got so bad, I asked for the strecting of my epohs. I had a friend that had this done, that was how I knew about the procedure.

I'm so glad you were able to have children. Enjoy every minute of it. I know from reading your post..it sounds like you are a great mother.

Ive tried taking generic prilosec, which after a couple of months seemed to help alot, and take the pain away. But then I quit it, and after a few days the pain came back again. My dr said to double up the dose and see if it helps, but just made it worse. So I quit taking it as of Thanksgiving. That was when I had the irregular heart rate, and seizures occuring. But I think that was because I was mixing Hydroco and the GERD medication, causing the seizures and heart rate to occur. Once I quit taking those two, things got much better.

I was very blessed to have three children. Once those drs told me I wasnt able to have children of my own, I was crushed and felt like I never would become a mother. But to this day, I walk into the drs for any visit and they cant believe I have three, all being so close in age too! Some days they drive me nuts, but I will always love them.

I tried several over the counter medic. for my heartburn however they did not work for me. Then I was presc. Prevacid, protonix, Prilosec (at diff. times) with all these I had seizures.

I have also learned that taking anti-acids lowers your B-12 levels.
