| These growers are really good. I have met some of these guys. I just got home from a trip and hope to post pics this week from our festival. Our largest was 1272 pounds (not mine). ![]() These world records have been broken every year for like 12 of the last 13 years. These things are amazing as you can almost see them grow. By the way, Linus is my hero. |

| Speber, was it the Bud brand? Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale? That is one we had at our festival and I agree it is very good!!! ![]() Goes great with Pumpkin Brats. No kidding, we have a local grocer who makes Pumpkin Brats for us. Just a hint of pumpkin flavor, not overpowering. YUMMMMMM. Birdy, I have never tried cooking with them yet, but hope to next year as I have found some recipes. None for pie, but several squash type recipes. Even found one for making them french fries style. I would only do that with some free growing giants though because I wouldn't want to mess with any that have had pest control or non-organic fertilizer. There are some growers now trying this completely organic just for the additional challenge. |

| I only eat Punkin' seeds - homemade, hot out of the oven, lightly oiled in olive oil and with Kelp or Sea Salt that's very lightly sprinkled ... I give the Pumpkin to someone else! (I'm allergic to pun'kin's - but not the seeds ...) |

| I make a crustless pumpkin pie all year long. It's a vegetable and desert. I use very little sugar in it and I add 2% Fat Free evaporated milk.

Just not possible in .... If I tried to grow a 1,000+ lb pun'kin here in FL, it would explode! ![]() It's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish this feat unless you can afford an air conditioned greenhouse! Promise not to ... ![]() (You will ... I just know you will....) ![]() But my son wanted me to grow some pumpkins and in spite of everything I told him that they cannot handle the tropical weather down here; not even if we had the tarp out and the tent up. HE DEMANDED and INSISTED that I try, but since I've done so before, and I purchased a package of giant pun'kin seeds... in spite of all of our efforts. We had some nice sized ones coming up, and all others, I picked them off and disposed of so that the growth would be focused on the pun'kins. Never mind to the fact that when one exploded, which of course scared him and the neighbors, and of course our cat that sent him fleeing up in the tree. Out of 7 pun'kins - 3 blew up in one day, and what a mess! Few days later, the other one blew up, and before you knew it, we were down to 1 freaking pumpkin - and my son was so desperate in saving it that he actually took the box fan and extension cord, thinking that with "wind blowing on it" would keep it cool. Are kids cute? He was actually causing the "hot air" to be blowing on it - and a sickening *KER-BOOM*, and when I went outside, I stood there totally bewildered as how our box fan got out there, and while I knew it was 63 and some pounds and I had it risen off the ground on hay, due to excessive rains. General Rule #1 - DO NOT place a box fan in from of a pumpkin, it will only cause the clean-up job to be bigger! General Rule #2 - Giant Pun'kins will not work in Florida Tropics, unless you cheat! General Rule #3 - Make sure you keep your eyes close on your kid! Especially when they're that desperate! ![]() General Rule #4 - Mega-Pumkin + Florida = Mega-Mess ![]() (I still haven't figured out how he got the box fan out of the house and 3 extension cords out either) |

Giant Pumpkins are not for the south If you want to grow biggens down south, you must start very early in the year or wait until almost fall. I have seen very few south of Kentucky. And Sharon is not kidding about them BLOWING UP. They will literally start growing so fast that the insides outgrow the skin and burst it wide open. A lot of growers will be watching the internet tomorrow for the weight of that Beast from the East!!!! |

| Brain, have you ever tried growing sunflowers? I like the mega sunflowers 'cause they smell great and they really attract a lot of birds. I like to eat the seeds when they're fairly tender.

| The possible world record in Birdy's link above started to go bad and did not qualify. It was still weighed as an exhibition and weighed over 1500 pounds. So far, last year's world record of 1689 still stands. |
