No it is not a fire fly ... though I remember seeing them when I visited my sister in VA. We don't have them around SoCA.

No it is not a spider... but we do have plenty of them here. Have seen far too many Black Widows.

OK, we're up to 16 questions, so far all we've got is that it's an insect that is sometimes kept as a pet & is not a firefly or spider.

I'd say ants (or an ant). It's the only other insect I can think that is ever kept as a pet
