Weddings

I need some brainstorm here (no pun intended)

I need some ideas for games for our wedding social. Things that you have seen at a social that were just awesome.

We are having the social at a great location. Kinda upscale (but its super cheap) We have a DJ that we know through a friend and some great auction prizes so far. (still looking for more, but can't find many people to donate at the moment)

We are having the social on May 14.

We have decided that in lieu of favours, at our reception, we will make a donation to the Epilepsy Foundation in honour of our guests.

anything else you guys can think of to help this social rock?!

I was at a wedding recently that included hula hoops and glow sticks for guests of all ages. The dress code was funky (the more interesting, the better, crazy hats especially). There were swing dancing lessons during the party, and the entire crowd was coaxed into a semi-choreographed dance to the song from Slumdog Millionaire. The guest book was notebook with a fake fur cover. And there was a photobooth too.

A little extra. I have seen them put disposable cameras on each table inviting the guests to take casual pictures throughout the event. Afterward, they can take all of the cameras and end up with good memories of the party. It is impossible to spend much time with anyone, so this helps them see everyone having a good time.

My daughter and her husband had a couple that were samba dance instructors come and teach the samba to anyone who wanted to participate on the dance floor. It was a ton of fun!

Make sure you invite lots of people from Transcona.. We're famous for having great socials.

With ours we had home made food, that went over really well. Pupusas (so so awesome, I'm always happy to go and see my mother in law) and tamales.

It's tough to get a lot of prizes, but if you do you'll rake in the cash. Keep on advertising everywhere.

You could try some karaoke. We didn't have a lot of games, but good music, lots of alcohol and home made food made ours a success.

Try not to stress out too much about it. It's a ton of planning, and I got all worked up and had a bunch of partial seizures the day of.

I am so nervous though!
I just want to make it fun, instead of people sitting around and talking.
My friend gave me the idea of a "jail". People pay $1 to put the person in jail for up to 10 minutes. in order to get out early someone needs to pay $2. In order to put the person in jail again. that person will now need to pay $2. the price goes up by a dollar each time the same person goes in, to kinda discourage someone from paying too much to keep them in there.

They also suggested I do some of those bean bag toss games, for some of the kids that might be there.

Ummm, not to sound too dumb, but what's a wedding social? Is it like a wedding shower? Is this a pre-wedding thing? Are you wanting them to donate in lieu of giving you gifts?

I may very well be the only woman in the world who is ignorant on weddingy stuff.

The jail is a good idea. Never heard of that before. I think that would go over well. Also games for the kids is a good idea.

How about getting some sumo suits? That's always a good time. Everyone would be interested in that.

I think socials are a Winnipeg thing. Kind of forgot about that.

Check this out and it will explain our great tradition:

Are you wanting it a carnival like atmosphere? I gather this is similar to our wedding reception?

I personally like the opportunity to stand around and chat with those people I rarely see, or to meet new people. But then after spending money on a new outfit, and hairdo, I doubt I would be happy about being put in "jail".
Then again... I enjoy dancing.

Okay, I get it now. So socials are intended to raise money to pay for the wedding, but you're having the social to raise money for the E foundation instead?

yes Elle. its like a raise moeny thing. most of the time its just like a dance and mingling and cool prizes and some food and cheap drinks. people have made enough money to pay for the entire wedding and come out debt free from the loan or whatever they used initially for the payment of the halls and things. sometimes you even make enough to pay for your honey moon.

My daughter will be married this July at the Renaissance Festival. She will be dressed as a queen from the medieval era and the groom will be a pirate. And the guests may come dressed for the festival or in shorts and T-shirts. Certainly not my cup of tea.

At least, I will be able to help out with a bridal shower, so I can choose something more my style.

alright, another question for you guys.

My social is may 14th, and the wedding is Sept 11th. both these nights are over at 1am. How on earth did you guys make it through the late night, dark lighting, loud music, probably hot as hell, and the lack of proper food. and not drinking too much alcohol when everyone wants shots with the newlyweds.

It is hard.. I had a simple partial the day after the social. from the fatigue and craziness, i didn't actually drink anything. But I had a tonic clonic two days after the wedding - lots of stress. even though it is a fantastic day it is stressful. wanting everything to go right. and trying to be everywhere at once at the reception. not having a moment to relax... it is the fastest night of your life!

I didn't drink much at the wedding, a few glasses of wine and a bit of champagne.

so i did have a post stress tonic clonic. common for me.

it would be for my and chads family. plus it comes with an open bar this package we got from the reception hall.

I'm half scottish, 1/4 irish and 1/4 ukrainian. *so lots of scotch, whiskey and vodka* and then Chad is scottish, irish and french. *so lots of scotch, whiskey rye and wine*

So there was tonnes of complaints when we oringinally thought of no alcohol because it was going to be expensive but after this deal, it didnt change the price. so we went with making people happy on that part, because people will stay longer, and we know they have more fun drunk *totally not ashamed to say that most of our families are alcoholic, because its the truth.*
