No. Sleep paralysis (and seizure disorders) can be brought on by not getting proper sleep. Sleep apnea might be the culprit exacerbating both problems.

Well, *if* you have sleep apnea, you would not be aware of it and you would not be getting as much (quality) sleep as you think you are getting.

I posted a link describing sleep apnea above:
Quote :
While patients with sleep apnea may not be aware of the problem, their spouse may seek medical assistance because they are frequently awakened by their partner's snoring, which may be described as loud, squeaky, or raspy. In other cases, the patient may seek help for fatigue, difficulty staying awake during the day, or falling asleep at inappropriate times.

Because of restless sleep and decreased oxygen supply to the brain, patients with sleep apnea may complain of impaired mental function, slowed reaction times, problems concentrating, memory loss, poor judgment, personality changes such as irritability or depression, morning headaches, and decreased interest in sex.

Additional symptoms may include excessive sweating during sleep, bedwetting, nightmares, dry mouth when awakening caused by sleeping with the mouth open, development of high blood pressure, and frequent upper respiratory infections. Young children with sleep apnea may have visible inward movement of the chest during sleep, learning problems, growth or developmental problems, and hyperactive behavior.

My mum has this, really badly.

She went to a special sleep hospital and they've sorted her out with a breathing machine. She now has a good nights sleep and not so tired during the day.

It's more common than people think.

Basically, sleep apnea is where you stop breathing for short periods of time while asleep. This causes a loss of oxygen to the brain and disturbs the sleep cycle so that you don't get enough of the deep sleep that you need. You may think you are getting a full night's sleep, but you aren't.

You should see an Ear Nose Throat Specialist.
He/She will then run a battery of tests and will determine from that
standpoint, it could be a warning sign that she could have had a blot
clot as well that could have triggered it.

It took Shand's Hospital awhile to realize I had progressive nerve
damage (from 1960-1970s') - and at that time there was nothing
they could do, since medical field wasn't that far "advanced" as
they are today ... but if you saw my posting in Living Well recently
in regards to Zonegran - my neurologist's partner may have hit something
there ...

As for the Cochlear Implant (when they first came out under
research) - I was ruled out because of the nerve damage and it
wasn't possible, and later, in early 1990s' they attempted the review
again, and ran another battery of tests even though accident made
me profoundly deaf, they ruled me totally unqualified completely.
A major disappointment, not even for one ear!

But one interesting thing that Neurologists often wonder which I
won't post is ... but they've often asked me questions .. but I can't
answer them because I don't know ...

"Does this nerve damage ever trigger the seizures?"

So one Neurologist decided to get a hold of an Audiologist and
hooked me up to see if they can provoke a seizure since I am
still very vibration sensitive (I can't hear but I can still feel the
vibrations) ... (I think this was in 1981 or 1982)

Go figure --- BOOM --- the EEG's went berserk and they had to
give me Diastat (I think) to stop the seizures and once I got out of
it --- I scolded him and said, "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!"
(It put me into Status but I do not remember what type of
seizures it put me into but I sure did wanted to wring the
neurologist's neck out at that time!)

For nearly 3 weeks I could still "hear" that going on in my head
before it gradually faded away ....

So when my epileptologist recently wanted to try to do this .... I told him
you better plan on being 10,000 miles away, I went through that
once before and I have absolutely NO INTENTIONS of going
through THAT again .... (and my mother was shaking her head
very hard "NO!" - because she remembered) ... and when the
epileptologist saw my mom shaking her head and the way I reacted sharply,
he got the point.

My mom later on that night told me - he called her after he got off
from work to talk about what had happened and he was afraid to
upset me so he felt it would be better if he talked with her instead,
so she told him what happened ... shortly after I got married a
year or so ...

Since it was more than 10 years ago - the epileptologist wasn't able to find
those medical reports as apparently he was genuinely interested
in those reports and the results and the outcome and especially
that it was at the same hospital. They don't have all my records
and everything in the storage - some, but not everything.

'Twas a shame, because, I should have kept a copy of it ....
