Smile AED's and dreaming

Hi all

Just a little question - am not sure if it is connected or not - or wether I am just a little crazy ( which most of my friends would put it down too)

I got diagnosed in November and started on Lamotragine - and since then I have the most vivid dreams literally every time I sleep . They are so real I struggle for a while after waking to pick out whats real in life and what was just a dream . I didnt mind until I started being chased by Dementors ( from Harry Potter ) .

Anyhows just thought I would see if it was just me

Thanks for reading :o)

Definitely a Lamotrigine side effect. The same thing happened for me, especially during the first few months when the Lamictal made me a very light sleeper. In my case, my body eventually adapted, and my sleep became less restless. The crazy dreams are much less frequent.

It's definitely one of the side-effects of lamotrigine, but everybody's different.

My partner had the exact opposite happen to him. He had crazy dreams before the lamotrigine, and after starting it, he stopped remembering them. I have no doubt he still has crazy dreams -- judging by the unusual conversations we've had in the early morning -- but he doesn't know what they're about anymore.

yup, side effect. I used to get vivid dreams before I was one the meds, but I find my dreams seem longer and more complex on Lamictal (lamotrinfe) i'm not sure why exaclty as dreamngi seems pretty rrandom to me. but maybe its chemiacl related?

That's a good question Rae -- I wonder what it is about Lamictal that affects REM sleep.

LAMICTAL (lamotrigine), an anti-epileptic drug of the phenyltriazine class, is chemically unrelated to existing anti-epileptic drugs. Its chemical name is 3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-as-triazine, its molecular formula is C9H7N5Cl2, and its molecular weight is 256.09. Lamotrigine is a white to pale cream-colored powder and has a pKa of 5.7. Lamotrigine is very slightly soluble in water (0.17 mg/mL at 25°C) and slightly soluble in 0.1 M HCl (4.1 mg/mL at 25°C).

LAMICTAL Tablets are supplied for oral administration as 25 mg (white), 100 mg (peach), 150 mg (cream), and 200 mg (blue) tablets. Each tablet contains the labeled amount of lamotrigine and the following inactive ingredients: lactose; magnesium stearate; microcrystalline cellulose; povidone; sodium starch glycolate; FD&C Yellow No. 6 Lake (100 mg tablet only); ferric oxide, yellow (150 mg tablet only); and FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake (200 mg tablet only).

this is from a website i found. I am going to do a little check on what each ingrediant can do.

dichlorophenyl has similar reactions and effects as cocaine.
povidone a synthetic polymer used as a dispersing and suspending agent. basically the vehicle for the drug
ferric oxide: A dark red compound, Fe2O3, occurring naturally as hematite ore and rust and used in pigments and metal polishes and on magnetic tapes
Triazine compounds are often used as the basis for various herbicides such as cyanuric chloride

lovely
