coping with floor kissing

i once watched a tv program about the life and times of charlie chaplin and i believe watching this program helped how my body has come to cope with hitting the deck so often,
in this program they were talking about how charlie chaplin used to fall over such a lot in his sketches but he never seemed to hurt himself,
his reply was " if you fall like a piece of china all rigid then you will smash into pieces" but however " you never see a rag doll get broken do you so the answer is to fall like a rag doll" and it works how many of you have gone rigid as you fall only to wind up hurting yourself,
i will say this much it takes a while to train your mind to make your body go limp while you are falling but once you master it conciously you will find that your body also follows the same idea when you are unconcious
just an idea to help some of you its helped me no end

Reading your post made me smile.
I always thought that Rebecca did not hurt herself much either because she is trained as a figure skater, and falling on hard ice is part of the deal. I think her body has muscle memory and knows to go down softly, even if she is unable to prepare for the fall.

I sure wish she had some memory of the "before" feelings. She never remembers what occurs hours prior.

I remember reading a book (fiction) about someone who suffered from seizures and went to a special camp to learn how to fall. I think it's a great idea.

Ironically, I recently played a part in a play where I had to faint. I wished I had thought about that.............

I believe this phenomenon is usually credited as the reason drunk drivers survive disproportionately in bad car wrecks.

Lureswinger, that's a real neat concept. I'm gonna yet that because I seem to constantly fall flat onto my back, or if I notice its going to happen I end up leaning forward and propelling my head into things.

Robin, that's a good reason why. Training to fall softly and safely is probably on of the reason she doesn get hurt.

Nakamova, which book was this?

Bernard, I remember hearing that somewhere too.

It wasn't a book it was a program on one of the discovery channels about the life and times of charlie chaplinn
I must of been bored senseless at the time as before I watched this I couldn't stand charlie chaplin but ever since I watched it I've been glad I saw it as I've learnt a lot from it

Rae --

I'll have to do a little searching in the deep archives to find the book -- it was a long time ago that I read it.

Wait I found it! the book is called "Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir", by Lauren Slater. It's a very strange book, infuriating in parts, but very interesting too. It was a school in Kansas (rather than a camp) that the narrator/author is sent to to learn how to fall.

Thanks Nakamova!
I went onto amazon.ca and was able to read the first 3 chapters. it sounds really ood, and really familiar the things she describes. I'm going to find this and read this. and then learn to fall.

Since I have trained my mind how to cope with falls I find that when I get myclonic jerks I just wind up on my knees whch has been a laugh since we had a load of workmen at our house while my meds were being changed and my wife said to them"if he drops to his knees infront of you then don't worry as he isn't gong to ask you to marry him" lol

thats too funny. I love humour like that. Myoclonics are so annoying, but since my meds and going gluten free *well 2 ish months with some stray* I have noticed almost no myoclonics at all. but I still get simple partials, complex partials and tonic clonics *with and without aura or complex partial before hand*

So small question for you. does this work when you have an aura first? or complex partial? or no warning at all? or is this all in the subconcious training

coping with floor kissing.

Yeah, I hit the deck with no warning sometimes. Last month, it was my knee that took the brunt. I don't know how long I was out for. I got up and iced it, but it still bothers me today.
Pardon me/stay with me here for a bit,......The thing is, is that the partial that caused the fall was brought on by major stress from another person. So, now every time my knee hurts, I get mad, and stressed out from the memory. The shock of rage that comes along with the sudden twinge of pain can make me ill - it's that "flushed" feeling. Now, it seems that, an injury (knee pain in this case) that was caused by a trigger (stress in this case), is from now on, a potential whole new trigger!!!
New triggers seem to be like new superstitions, i.e. I wasn't afraid of walking under ladders until I heard it was bad luck. My knee's getting better. Thanks so much for all of your support, it makes a huge difference. I will read about the proper falling techniques discussed here. there must be something useful for me, even though I get no warning when I drop. Some split-second yoga thing-a-majig, maybe.

I am starting to have the falls now and I get so mad because my friends and family have to see this and it happens in stores and just anywhere. I just don't wana keep falling because now I am not in school. My mom is working on getting me a aid to be with me at school. until then my teachergives me these huge packets to do at home and omg!! when I forget things we were taught in class it gets soo hard.

Jellbell, when

you "cope with kissing the floor" like this, it is typically an atonic seizure that has happened. In other words, your body has lost all muscle tone, and just sort of flopped, I guess is a good way to describe it, straight down to the ground with no prior warning.

So you're on homebound schooling now, huh? Well that sort of sucks. Have your mom ask if the school can provide a homebound tutor or aid. She should also be asking them about implement an IEP or a 504 plan.....she'll need to get your doctor in on that one. With the doctor's help, it WILL happen. Either of these plans will provide you specific accommodations to deal with your seizures...and one of them could be an aide.

Take care!

Meetz
