Depakote ER for SPS with headaches

I have had a bad month with an olfactory aura daily and have started to get headaches. Not "bad" headaches, but nonetheless, vague ones that I haven't had in a long time ever since I have been on an NSAID for back problems. The NSAID nicely stopped headaches-just a side bonus. Well, just saw the neurologist and the Keppra I am on just isn't doing anything for the olfactory aura (burn smell, chemical smells, etc). neurologist doesn't want me on two anti-epileptic drugs-really wants to keep me on monotherapy since I don't lose consciousness etc. So he has now added Depakote 250 mg ER to start with, because this also addresses migraines (and migraines can have the olfactory aura too). so since Depakote ER addresses both-he's giving it a trial, and my Keppra is reduced for eventual discontinuation. Would be good if my olfactory aura is in fact migraines, but I do have an abnormal 72 hour EEG that shows sharp waves, so can't go prematurely thinking I don't have simple partial seizures. With my luck, I may just have both, or maybe the headaches are just part of the simple partial seizures. They don't disable me either, but they are an additional symptom now. I would also wonder that the all day smell of a burn odor would give a person a headache too!

I think it's good that your neurologist is trying to keep your meds to a minimum. Fingers-crossed that the Depakote does the trick. Keep us posted.
