I think at times my seizure activity moves to my throat. I get this intense dry cough like feeling that just comes and goes. There doesn't seem to be a cause for it but I notice most when I am having seizure activity. Does anyone know whether or not this could be a seizure in the throat? Does anyone have seizures that affect their throats and if so what does it feel like? Just wondering before I ask the doc on Oct 2. Thanks
Erin

This is just a wild guess, but I recently read about abdominal epilepsy and I wonder if this is what you are experiencing but for some reason it is in the throat area?? I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what others say.

That makes me wonder too. Because when I get the throat thing it goes to my stomach and sometimes it makes me throw up. Is this what you are talking about?

Sometimes people do get a strange taste in their mouth during the "aura" or simple partial seizure and sometimes people do experience headaches and nausea right before a seizure. What you're experiencing could be an 'aura' or simple partial seizure.

I had one before, just ever the one when before i went tonic i was told i was holding my throat and trying to speak, but just a weird noise that i cant explain using a keyboard.Although i was leaning against a trailer at the time,i knew what was happening and was conscious.Someone then gently put me on the ground and i went tonic. As i said above it's only ever happened once.I guess it's just another one off these epilepsy things i cannot answer.

Is it like... your throat is kinda closing up at the base or something is pressing on it? Or general numbness? It feels like I want to cough, it's closing up, and it's numb all rolled into one and usually my head feels kind of numb/tingly and and ache. Is that it? or am I describing something totally different? I'm just describing how I'm felt not too long ago, actually. I hadn't even thought it could be seizure symptoms.

Yeah for me it felt like it was closing, and i instinctivley put my hands round it as i couldn't speak, exept for a forced "noise" that was unrecognisable. It was pretty scary as i had never experienced it before. But im sureit was seizure related due to the tonic seconds after.

I don't normally get tonics afterward, luckily. I just have that sensation and then I feel tired and have a headache occasionally. Sometimes I'm lucky and escape the headache but I'm normally exhausted every day. It's interesting these little things that I never once thought were seizure activity that could possibly be. I'll make a note of this in my journal.

this is interesting to me also, as for the past few days I just don't feel right, like I have this almost rolling feeling in my stomach a lump in my throat and a headache from the proverbial, (but its not like the migraines I get from time to time) more like the after effects of having an Aura, moving my head and eyes rapidly makes me feel like im going to get an aura, I feel almost like im on the verge or having many many little misfires not enough to create an aura but its playing with all my senses, lingering hanging feeling, its really strange, I feel almost like im not in time with my body or I cant keep up with what im doing .... does that make any sense to you guys??

Everything makes sense because with epilepsy everything is different with every single person.Mine was over in a matter ten seconds before i went tonic,it's just so hard to describe. If i was you i would head to your doctor and tell him what you have told us here.Peace off mind can go a very long way and with any luck he can get to the bottom off it.All the best, and let us know how you get on.

Today when I was at the store with my mom I started feeling like I was beginning to separate from reality a little. Like things weren't feeling right. My head was feeling all weird and woozy, dizzy and spinning and my body felt like it was fuzzy along with my head and I felt lost. I was looking around at all the people in the store and going "I don't feel right, something isn't right" and I kept touching things almost like I needed to in order to help myself feel "better", I guess? It eventually went away and that's when I could find my mom but I wandered aimlessly around the store and it felt so weird. I was so tired and out of it, I could hardly articulate what I had been thinking of (looking for a cherry pitter) when I first walked in there and I walked out of there in a haze of feeling sleepy. I have a headache and I slept pretty hard on the way home. I'm still pretty exhausted and it was kinda how I felt a week ago Friday but just on a much smaller scale. Weirdest feeling ever. I'm definitely writing this one down in my journal and telling her when I can get in touch with her because it was pretty scary.

Similar things happen to me too. It's almost like being a puppet on a string. I have even been followed in stores because they thought I was going to steal something. You should definitely tell the doc. At times it feels like I am being drawn to things. Like being lead by an invisible force. I haven't done that in about a month and to be truthful don't really want to either. For me it was good to hear that another person felt something similar. Good luck to you.

I have had only abdominal seizures before. Which I guess is the same thing, with it being confined to one part of the body.

For me I distinctly remember touching something like the turkey basters, they're soft and filmy. Like the rubber ones? That's the only thing I remember about it. I'm hoping to get a call today, if not I'll pester her tomorrow so we'll see. It is good to know that someone else has had the same experiences. I don't know if anyone was following me, I wasn't aware enough to figure that out. Have you had many of those seizures?

I used to have them all the time. I would walk around the house like with a leading force and clean and do all sorts of crazy stuff. I would go to the store and find myself finding the strangest things interesting. I feel it mostly on the left side of my body. I too am relieved to find that other people go through similar experiences. It doesn't happen to me all the time though. Just when I am under a lot of stress and really confused it's hard to explain. I noticed it happens more before I am going to have a really big seizure like one that lasts longer than a few seconds more like 10 min. Let me know what the doc says. I don't get to see the neurologist until Oct 2. thanks Erin

Erin --

The dry cough sensation could definitely be a seizure symptom related to the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is a long cranial nerve that runs from the stomach up to the brain. It plays a role in causing a lot of the sensations associated with seizures -- things like nausea and goosebumps and heart rate changes. The vagus nerve is also one of the major nerves associated with coughing, and if there's a lesion on the vagus nerve it can cause a hoarse voice, difficulty in swallowing, and malfunction of the gag reflex.

This thread is a great way to summarize what my episodes are like. The dr says these are seizures involving the insular cortex....begin with abdominal sensations....move to throat, soft palate... Progress to other sensory symptoms including facial tingling tingling in arms etc...

This. It has happened to me in the past. No headaches, but the nausea came from awkward thoughts.

I'm not sure but I think this has possibly happened to me a couple times. It does seem like since I learned I have been having seizures I notice about a lot of things that I would typically just dismiss.
