Greetings to you all,
Thank you all in advance for bothering to read this, and thank you more if you contribute to my diagnosis.

Male, age 50. Looking back, I think I first passed out at school when age 12 when counting others swimming lengths. Knocked 3 teeth out and was passed off as a simple faint.

Over the next 40 years there have been random faints, from standing at the urinal to sat on the sofa. Sometimes years would pass with apparently nothing. As a fairly heavy drinker(of beer) and smoker, 5 years ago after two repeated early morning awakenings and collapses, I realized blood pressure was sky high and quit smoking.

Things seemed to improve. Occasionally I would have that feeling of "a puppet with its strings cut" and feeling faint. A rapid lowering of the head or getting actually down on the floor, sometimes seemed to prevent losing consciousness.

Two years ago the inevitable occurred. I walked into a convenience store feeing fine. Woke up a few minutes later in a pool of blood with a huge gash in my head. Apparently I had collapsed and fell through a fridge class window.

Typically though, when I came too. I felt fine and was fully coherent.

This meant hospital and loads of tests. I wanted the solution. Brain MRI, EEG ECG, blood pressure, sugar, flashing lights tests, the lot.

Conclusion? Nothing substantial. High Blood pressure, borderline diabetes (6mol), possible epilepsy. Awaiting an angiogram.

Recently its all started occurring again more frequently, (so was evening beer consumption). So I have quit drinking and modified my diet for sugar level. (2 weeks now). Pressure and sugar are within the "high normal" range now. But I still get these seizure feelings morning and night especially in bed.

Symptoms:-
1) Palpitations
2) Feeling of "a puppet with its strings cut" and feeling faint. That sensation that the life is being sucked out of you
3) Numbness in extremities
4) General feeling of unwell
5) Fainting sensation

Getting up and actually starting something physical normally relieves things.

Hanging head down out of bed feels like it sometimes stops me from losing consciousness. ( I start tapping the ground and counting).

Normally if I do pass out, I "Dream" of being somewhere really nice and well being.

When I regain consciousness my head has a strong buzzing feeling, sensation returns to my hands as I realize where I am. (Usually on the floor), sometimes I say something uncontrolled. "With a Buzzer on my back" I remember once, and, "That was Interesting".

Once conscious and understanding what has happened, I normally feel extremely well. (Unless physically injured). Its like something that has possibly been pending for some time has been released.

As an IT techie I can only describe it as if my brain had to re-boot.

Sorry to bore you all with this but I am sure I am not unique in this and would like to connect with others with similar questions. My real worry is that one day the Re-Boot will not actually boot back up properly, or maybe not at all.

Thanks
Gar

Before some of my seizures I will feel dizzy and light headed. My lips might tingle too. I generally have a seizure after that. After most of my seizures I'll have a pretty bad headache and be very tired. I'm usually even tired the next day too.

A lot of times however I won't have those happen, or I won't remember that I did. I'll just be sitting there and next thing I know my husband will say "You just had a seizure". I had no clue it happened.

Sometimes I will say things during and that don't make any sense. If I say something after it's like I'm finishing a sentence that I never started.

I have a good bit of memory loss because of my epilepsy in general. Sometimes the day that I have a seizure I'll forget things that happened a few minutes to a few days before the seizure. How bad the seizure was depends on how bad the memory loss.

Don't worry your not boring us! There are many people who can relate to everyone's problems are you'll get a lot of help learning and dealing with things on here, I know I have!

I usually have my seizures in my sleep so I dont know what heralds them. Once or twice recently I have had a tingling in my legs, it is very unpleasant, drinking water and apple vinegar usually gets rid of that, however this once it was followed by a seizure, the seizure was the experience in my head, it was like losing control of my thoughts, my thoughts flying through space, and I became very frightened and passed out.... that is the best explanation I can give, but it might have been like a panic attack?? It was whirly in my head...Oh damn, sorry, I can see it but cant just explain how out of control it was..... and sucks every bit of energy out of my body, cant move.. I suppose I had better leave it like that for now. Any more questions please ask and I will try and explain further.

My seizures come in cycles every 3-5 days. After a seizure (nocturnal only) there is 1-2 days of complete calm (no activity), then typically a slow build-up of random activity and sensations day and/or night of tingling and minor motor movements, etc. for 1-2 days/nights then the seizure. Then the cycle starts again with a "grace" period, followed by tingling/random movement, seizure . . . So yes, I do believe that my brain "reboots" itself when the seizures occur.

My neurologist had a name for this cyclic nature of seizures, but I forget what it was. She is trying to extend this "grace period", as she called it but I will not be free of this "rebooting". I like your choice of term, and it is one an online friend of mine and I also use.

Hi Gar,

You didn't bore me at all with your vision of the brain. We all are quite unique in that we are electrifying. ;)

Our brains are actually electrically powered and when we have a seizure, it's having a power outage in that certain section of the brain. It's like a computer and it shuts itself down, and after a few moments or a few hours, depending on the type of seizure, it will "re-boot" itself.

Check out this interesting website:
I've had CP's and TC's and after the TC's it takes me hours or sometimes days to 're-boot'. Usually I have an "aura" before my seizures, so I do know when one is coming on and know to get to a safe place. I've never felt extremely well after a seizure. I usually have a bad headache afterwards.

Did you know that in some places they still use ECT for severely depressed people so they can feel better after the treatment? But it isn't like it once was, they say. That's what some types of seizures are supposed to do for some.

HA! Another IT techie thinking the same!
Another funny thing is after the day or 2 of getting out of the "fog", I like to call it, I seem to remember things again clearer. It's almost like my brain rebooted to start a defragmentation....
but that's just me.
I only have nocturnal grand mals upon a wake cycle so far and only a couple a year it seems and I do read/research a lot of stuff....

When I get my monoclonic jerks badly it feels like my body is short circuiting and trying to reboot itself but not quite getting there.
My arms snap up and my head snaps back but my body falls, once it gets to this point I usually get these for about an hour getting worse building into a seizure when I wake up about the same way as you described.

the comparison I give my techie friend is "it's like running a PC and the HDD has bad sectors, sure it runs but it throws errors (little errors=small seizures. a big enough error to cause a reboot=grand-mal! Most of my techie friends are hardware guys but the programmer gets it too.

I have experienced a few of those in these conditions: antiepileptics (not sure if that is a strong factor)+heavy drinking daily+not enough sleep that night+rapid awakening=faint in the corridor of my house and at one time (the morning of my 18th birthday) opened a gash under my chin.

I quit drinking a long time ago and that does not happen anymore.

Electroshock therapy is a form of seizure administered under controlled circumstances. It can definitely "reboot" the brain for folks suffering from severe depression, lifting their depression for significant periods of time. It has its side effects (particularly on memory), but the re-booting can be a lifesaver for some.

I've experienced that re-booting sensation a few times as well, though not until after the post-ictal haze has dissipated.

I think it's a very usefull analogy, and it's the way I describe my post-ictal experience- especially to others without E. Whether the brain actually does 'reboot' though I'm not sure, but I suspect the analogy breaks down quite quickly.

However, that feeling of various parts of the mind slowly starting to work again reminds me exactly of a PC checking for attached devices and initialising them during POST...

...all be it a very sloooow PC that takes a good 20 minutes to get to the desktop :p

Hello again,
Firstly, thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. Its all really good useful stuff and has helped me understand a lot more about what is happening with me.

Well I managed about a month off the beer. Lost a bit of weight and felt brighter in the mornings. Cannot say it made me feel remarkably better though. However the Blood pressure and Sugar levels are much better for it. I will try and just drink responsibly for now.

No total passing's out since last post, but I have been close a few times and head down to the floor seems to have just about prevented it. Several spasm's in the early stages of sleep however.

One thing I have noticed is laying on my left side and somewhat curled up, frequently brings on that feeling of unwell and almost breathless. When it happens to just uncurl and lay on my back and the sensation has gone. I look forward to my angiogram and will tell the specialist of this symptom in case there is something going on there. Unfortunately its in 5 months time still.

Wish you all are getting on ok.
