To drink, or not to drink ?....

Hmmm....

....well, there have been threads on here before referring to drinking water; some pointing out that it's not such a good thing for us to be drinking too much water as it 'weakens/waters down' our medication; which I CAN understand.

However, on the flip-side, I'm also not convinced <scratching chin>

The reason I question this is because of the importance of water to both our brain, and our bodies, and feel that if I don't get enough water during the day, I feel more tired than norm; and in return, tiredness for me = more chance of having a seizure.

So what do we all think ? To drink, or not to drink ?

If you agree that we SHOULD drink, regardless of whether it 'waters down' our medication, what would you say is a sensible volume of intake per day ?

Well I think manufacterers have taken into consideration a properly hydrated body when determining dosages that would be effective.

Also it is good to drink the 5-8 glasses (meaning 250ml at a time) of water during the day. that is what is recommended. NOBDOY should under hydrate or over hydrate as it causes problems to those with out disorders/conditions/diseases and those with out medications.

When I was on Lamictal and Topamax my doc made a point of telling me to drink lots. Something to do with kidney health. I was mega-thirsty on both, so I figured that was good advice.

Edit - I thought you meant WATER. Oh, boy, am I naive. My doc told me to drink water!

Alcohol, I vote DON'T DRINK. If it increaes seizures, or even might, why even take the chance?

Yes, I got slightly confused at first too. I thought she was talking about alcohol, then she mentioned "watering down" the meds. so I assumed water

Well, I thought it was water too at first and voted accordingly, lol. I keep alcohol to a MINIMUM with my meds. That means 1-2 glasses of wine maybe once every couple of months. I cook with alcohol more than I drink it.

I think it's fine for us to drink water. Being dehydrated can't help your seizure threshold..

I hope it's okay anyways as I drink a ton of water every day. It helps me stay away from soda.

As for alcohol though, I have a few drinks depending on the situation. Never more than two at a time, and never more than a few times a month. But during my remission stage from 04-06 I sure had a lot of fun..

I keep electrolytes in my system by diluting a sports drink. I do not drink alcohol at all.

I suppose the volume of water is dependent upon how many electrolytes we need, how dehydrated we become especially in hot weather and whether our kidneys can get rid of extra toxins in our system that could adversely affect other organs like the brain.

I'm in a bit of a strange situation on this one, hehe. Due to some pretty significant spinal injuries from the car accidents that caused my TBIs (yep, more than one according to the docs), I actually have to make certain that I am hydrated. It keeps my spine & spinal muscles from going bananas and limits the amount of time I have to spend being tortured by the chiropractor and massage therapist and also limits the amount of vicodin and muscle relaxers I have to take. Staying well-hydrated (and sometimes, slightly over-hydrated if it's particularly hot), I can make a one-month supply of vicodin last about 4-6 months, so I'd really rather take my chances with the water instead of the narcotics.

As far as alcohol, one or two gluten-free beers or a glass of wine with dinner is my limit, and that's about once a month or so.

I drink a TON of water and Crystal Lite a day. I don't know if it's because of the meds or not. My dad, who has diabeties (probably spelled that wrong) said that drinking alot could be a sign of diabeties.

I try to stay away from caffeene beverages because the neurologist said that it wasn't good to drink them.

Usually twice a year my husband and I go to this really nice resturant where I will have a glass or two of wine, other than that I don't drink. I may have a glass of wine with my girlfriend who lives out of state comes come, but those are really the only times. I was never a big drinker to begin with, I was always the one who drove.

Can also, as in my mother's and grandmother's cases, be a sign of renal failure...which is why I practically force my doctors to stay on top of my bloodwork.
