Epilepsy and Hairdressing?

Hey, its Roxanne again!

I think im posting this question in the wrong place on the site because i think the foyer is only for introductions!?

I'd still like to ask some questions though (even if it is in the wrong place) and id love for anyone with information or even just opinion, to write back!

I would like to persue a career in hairdressing but i really feel my epilepsy is holding me back.

I have the opportunity to start a hairdressing course in June but to be honest im really scared because of my condition.

My friends and family say not to worry but i cant help it! I need to know if there is anybody out there who has epilepsy and is a hairdresser or if anybody knows of anyone who is a hairdresser and has epilepsy...

Id love to hear peoples opinions about it too.. My situation is that i have not had a full seizure since being put on my medication in July 2007 (although i do have what i call 'mini-fits' where i zone out for a few seconds and throw up). I do feel my epilepsy is under control somewhat but i cant help but worry that deciding to do this is wrong.. for all sorts of reasons -most importantly, the health and safety of me and the client.

I mean who would want someone with epilepsy cutting their hair?? Anyone?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts/opinions and information

Correct. The Foyer is for introductions. Click the "Epilepsy Forum" link at the op of the page to see a list (and description) of the different forum rooms. I moved this thread to the Kitchen where it belongs.

Arrow The Other Side of the Fence

I tried opening several sites, and tried to locate
the thread (postings), because I know there
were several women who had controlled
seizures and were Professional Hairdressers
(or Stylists, if you prefer that term), but I'm
not able to find or locate it.

I really believe it all depends on the Laws of the
Land and the Health Department regardless of
where you are which may vary, is the whole
issue altogether.

But then you have "Wisdom & Common Sense"
that comes into factor - with YOU in mind:
safety being the priority. Not that they are
restraining you or constraining you, but rather,
they are looking at everything from the whole
perspective in the field.

Even though you may be "Seizure free" for
3 years, and back on the certification, and
then all of all of a sudden, 2 years later, you
sustained a major tonic-clonic (aka Grand Mal)
while you were working, and you were holding
a pair of sharp scissors. Have mercy if those
scissors landed through your throat, or puncture
your heart, or some vital organ if you were to
fall during a tonic-clonic!

See the point? I'm not trying to be 'negative',
but rather looking at it from the other side of
the fence of "What if's" that people sometimes
fail to see.
