The Fear

Does anyone else get feelings of fear during an aura?

It seems appropriate as usually it implies I'm going to have a seizure in the near future.

But it's strange to have a such a feeling arrive out of nowhere - I feel like I'm at the edge of a very tall building. Or someone is chasing me.

I don't mind deja vu as an aura but I'm not a big fan of the fear.

Chris

Hi Chris, I use to feel fear during an aura.

I told my doctor and she gave me a Lorazepam for emergincies. I take one only when I know a big seizure is coming. I do not take it during every aura. Some aura's are seizures themselves. Small ones.

I have had epilepsy for 60 years, now. The fear has gone away. I just turn on melody music and lie down. That usually stops a tonic-clonic from coming on. Have you gone to Speber's Auditorium? It is all about music. It is great.

Somtimes yes I have had an awful fear before/during a complex partial (I dont get these that often though)

The fear I get can only be described as a fear that is not human...and it doesnt feel like its from me.. the fear feels like its outside of me.. like a demon or a presence of fear ourside of me. I cant really explain, but thats why I say its not a human fear, because it doesnt stem from me.. a human.. but its absaloutly terrifying. I feel like this force/presece/demon of fear is trying to kill me...though it feels worse than being killed

cant really explain that well.. maybe it will make some sense lol

Yes, it's like a combination of spidey-sense tingling with the terror that arrives in nightmares. Fortunately a pretty rare occurence for me.

Yeah that spidey-sense tingling is right! Sorta like you feel like someone is behind you, or your about to fall, or something fall on you. It's not quite paranoia, but like a fear of the unknown

yep.

Right before I havea complex partial.. im usually laying down and I lay on my stomach it feels like something is on my back, I get this sensation on my forehead and it whooshes through my body ... then I feel like electric coming out of my body.. extrmelyt scary especialyl combined with the sense a demon is trying to kill me becuase I think if I do come out my body it will grab me and take me to hell.

Im a christian and so this goes totally against my beliefs I dare not tell anyone in church....about hte out-of-body experiences....

I only ever once actually remember the feeling that I came out and it felt like I had to force myself back into my body...and that I had been taken thousands of feet into the air in a splut second. It always stems from my stomach (after the sensation on my forehead) so these psychics that claim our spirit/soul is attatched with the chord in the stomach may be right.. (I know I sound crazy here) Infact when I first started having these.. I originally went to a psychic chat room .. not a Neurologist.

The only really weird thing.. is that I eventually came to the conclusion the sensation on my fore-head was like a 3rd eye....becuase though my eyes were closed.. I could see everything around me. Very weird.. and very scary.

DO you ever wonder if psychics are having seizures too ?

I have complex partial seizures and I get a feeling of fear or fright- then I try to do something to stop it from happening- but nothing ever works. I don't remember doing those things either- that I think will stop a seizure from progressing.

Fear or fright is the worse- because i can remember those feelings since they happen during all of my seizures.
Afterwards i feel depressed or upset that a seizure just happened but i know that after recovering and resting that that feeling too will go away.

Seizures and auras and emotions connected to complex partials and the temporal lobe are interesting to me.
Sometimes I feel that I write music better after a seizure, like an hour or two later.

Take care everyone
Crystal

Yes I do. Fear to the point of reaching out (or trying to) and grasping at things. It is fear of the seizure, but very strong. Describing it as falling might be pretty accurate.

Over the years, this has sometimes given way to anger. Furious at the seizure and I am not to sure if I haven't stopped some from goind into tonic-clonics by such focused anger.

wow thats some scary stuff. the only thing i can think of is sometimes when im laying in bed sleeping or maybe about to sleep it feels like all the sudden i cant move and someone is slowly smothering me. i know that im not being smothered but if im on my stomach i cant help but think im going to accidentally suffocate. and it happens when i lay on my back too. it could happen while laying on just a mattress with no covers or anything in the way of my breathing.. in those cases i convince myself im not smothering but it just feels like.. death is coming or like somethings trying to suck me into myself. like if underneath the mattress is a door to hell or somewhere and something is pulling my soul thru my body and out the back. haha i just realized i rambled. but is this similar to whats happening to u? iv'e never had it happen during an eeg and never had someone see it happen while watching me sleep so i dunno if it is a seizure or not. physically all i can remember is not being able to move. im sorry about your sensations though. that sounds just terrible. :-/ wish i had something more helpful to say

Yes, I can relate Chris. I too have this as an aura. It is quite overwhelming to say the least. I will stare off and then all of a sudden my mind says run something is after you and so I do. I will run out into the street and take off down the road before you know it. The night before Halloween I did this and I collapsed in the road with kids and their parents looking at me so my husband says. ( I live near a church and they were having a festival and I was near the church.) My husband had to carry me back to the house and I finally came to.

This happens all the time. I had this happen at work and even when I went to the Mayo Clinic it happened. I just ran out of the hotel room and next thing I knew I was in the ER at Mayo and admitted.

I told my new neurologist about this and he was stated " It happened at work!" His eyes got huge. I think he felt kind of bad for me then.

Yes, the deja vu is not so bad compared to the fear. It's horrible. I hate it and wish it would stop.

Thanks for the support everyone. It sure is an awful feeling... I wonder why it is fear of all things. Why couldn't it be happiness??

I always wondered if the fear was just fear of having a seizure, but then I realized that the feeling of fear is the seizure. Maybe the fear feels worse than it would be because we're compounding other fear on top of it.

Chris, I do have the happiness aura as well. I don't mind that type but I tend to get a little high off of it and people will accuse me of being drunk or something when in fact it is an aura. I will also get really angry. Out of all the neuros that I have seen none of them understand that this is an aura and tend to ask me about my mood. MY MOOD IS FINE BUT THE SEIZURES CAUSE THIS! That is what I want to tell them. These moods do not last long and then the seizure hits and after the seizure subsides then I am back to my normal mood. I don't understand why doctors don't understand this about me even after telling them that these are auras. Maybe they don't like to be told that but oh well, I think sometimes I know more than the doctors because I know my body better.

The sensation of fear comes from the area where the seizure originates -- in many kinds of epilepsy, that area includes the amygdala, the part of the brain that is responsible for forming and storing memories associated with emotional events -- especially fear. Parts of the amygdala are involved in many fear responses, including freezing (immobility), rapid heartbeat, increased respiration, and stress-hormone release. So any damage or malfunctioning of the area can trigger fear auras, with all the unpleasant sensations people have described above. Of course knowing why they show up, doesn't make them feel any better...

Hi Vapour, You say right before a complex partial, that would be an aura. Everyone has different types of auras. There is also stomach epilepsy. There are no demons associated with epilepsy. No demons are there to kill you. That is an old and wrong belief.

You are not crazy, you just do not understand your type of epilepsy. Sometimes, I feel like my seizures are going to kill me. In fact, I almost died 4 times from seizures. You just feel like you are having an out of body experience. That is a part of your epilepsy, not religion, pscyics or anything like that.

Has your religion taught you that epilepsy and demons go hand in hand? Has your religion taught you that you are going to hell because of it. You had better get out of that religion. You are being taught lies.

The word hell means the grave. Look up 1John 4:8, it makes the simple statement, "God is Love." Would a god of love, put anyone in hellfire? No!! If you have any more statements about your beliefs, send me a PM. A lot of religions teach people about hellfire to scare them into joining a religion. My religion states that hellfire is a lie. Look up hell in the Dictionary.
Send me a PM, proving to me that there is a hellfire.

Seizures are a part of the brain where something has gone wrong. It is coming from the brain.

If you

can describe an aura as sheer terror of having one because you're super-shaky from being tired, then YES I've had that. But I've had nothing else that would really qualify as being an aura, I think. Mine are all nocturnal, so I only know that they've happened once I wake up.
