After having seizure like symptoms for months, and having doctors not help me whatsoever; I finally met with my regular family doctor today, who referred me to an E specialist and neurologist closer to me. Because of the frequency of my seizures my dr decided to start me on Keppra twice a day, 500 mg tablets ( even though I have no official diagnosis of seizures). what's your experiences on Keppra?

I have only taken one dose so far for tonight… next dose in the morning. already feel really "out of it" like dizzy or tired or both? I can't really tell lol. but I am so excited to finally have someone listening to me!!!! :D

Wanting to hear everyone's experiences on it, and best times to take it (I have almost a full time job that varies shifts). the good and the bad, the ins and the outs? I have simple partial/complex partial seizures.

New kid on the block

I began Keppra for my seizures last Thursday. I began at two pills a day, one in the morning and one at supper. I took 500 mg daily but continued have 3-4 seizures each day. Saw my neuro yesterday and he increased my dosage to 1000 mg daily. It makes me feel a little dizzy and maybe a little manic. After my evening dose, I feel angry for a short while. I am hopeful the increased dose will decrease my seizures.

I have been on Keppra since 2008, for me I haven't had any major side effects while on it.
But you should both know that Keppra is nicknamed Kepprarage as one of its main side effects is it can affect your moods & make you really cranky.
I believe Vitamin B or B6 is supposed to help with the Kepprarage.

I haven't had any issues with Keppra rage but there are quite a few members who have so I'm sure they will be able to give more advice.

When I alter my medications whether it be changing meds or just adjusting the dosage I always allow myself at less the 1st 2 weeks for any side effects to appear until my system gets used to the new medication change.

Good luck, hope you both have minimal side effects

i took it years ago with no issues. Was put on it again recently and had severe side effects. Had the normal tired dizzy feeling but then had major stomach pain and dark tar like stools had to get off it,

I've been on Keppra- 3000 mgs. for 12 years and haven't had any of the rage/depressive issues that CQ talks about. But I also take an anti-depressant. Mood disorders also go along with E for some, so Keppra could make the moods worse. Make sure you tell your dr. ASAP if you notice any weird thoughts/feelings you start having.

Good luck!

thank you everyone for the helpful info! I can sleep, it took me a while; but everyone was also texting me a of the awesome news lol! just felt really weird though. day 2 of aeds today!!!

I was diagnosed several years ago with depression and put on paroxetine. I stopped taking it about a year ago, and haven't felt any major problems of depression. but I am a little concerned about the mood changes that keppra can cause. guess it's just a wait and see what happens :)

My neuro always told me that it may take 4 to 6 weeks to find out how a med is going to work for you and to see if any side effects occur. After that the dosage may need to be increased or decreased. You may even be taken off the med if it doesn't seem to be working at all.

I've been on keppra for over 5 years and the only real problem I have is Kepprage, I get angry very easy. People have taken B6 to help them with it. I tired but I started having seizures while taking it, but everyone is different when it comes to things like that.

I was switched from Dilantin generic to generic Keppra last July. I have had some really bad days. Today being one. I feel like I have no energy at all. I don't feel like eating but eat and drink coffee trying to get energy. I have been taking two different things with B vitamins trying to get over this. My other problem is I have had a change in wrk shift last May and also hormone changes. Between wrk shift changes hormone changes and medication changes I'm not sure how to pin point what s causing me to feel like I do today. Only thing I do know is it is all more depressing and more than I care to deal with. If weren't for my grand daughter and keeping my job I think I would much rather deal with seizures. Have been discriminated against at wrk and lost a job because of seizure issues also.

so I been on keppra for a week. that complete exhaustion feeling is kinda going away. it seems my seizures were less frequent BUT worse. I had to seizures that they said were TC. and then I had one yesterday I have no memory of even having. I pretty much just ended up in the hospital. A few drs think I'm having pseudo seizures because of the way I am responding to the meds. but those that witnessed them, said they were true seizures. guys help me! I'm devastated today! just want to quit!!

I been able to pinpoint the triggers of each of the seizures since I been on the meds. the first 2, I hadn't taken my evening dose yet, and my body was exhausted. and then yesterday, it was heat. I just remember being so hot and asking for a fan.

Heat is exhausting and it sounds like exhaustion can be a trigger for you. I know how tired Keppra can make you. It will get better, but it will always make you a little tired. I take 2000 mg 2x a day. Set alarms to remind you to take the meds!

Vitamin B6 (and I take B12) to help the mood.
