Hi All,

Has anybody had low serum calcium levels and has this effected their seizures/episodes?

I have felt really strange of late - I have been to the docs and had blood tests done and this is what they showed.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

What AED are you taking? Some of these meds can cause Hypocalcemia, so you need to let your neurologist know.

Hi - Lamotrigine.

I have felt fine (well as fine as I can be for 10 years - I am very lucky) until the last day of my hols (Cyprus) I got bitten on the last night about 12 times and its stemmed from there.

GP is sending me for blood tests tomorrow to test for a vitamin D deficiency but that would be odd if I have just come back from Cyprus! Lol

Will see what the bloods say...

Low serum calcium levels would ordinarily indicate a significant deficiency. I hope the test was just a fluke. When was the last time your calcium blood levels were checked?

I am not sure I think last November and they were all ok. They have now tested for vitamin D as apparently lack of vitamin D is the main cause of low calcium levels. I have just come back from Cyprus though so I am not sure whether this is going to be the cause.
I am also not sure how this could effect this but I have been taking over the last few months Oxy Powder. It's Magnesium based and is a great laxative.

Maybe this is reducing my levels elsewhere. I don't know.

At the moment I feel asleep when I am awake! šŸ˜³

When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease my serum calcium and D levels were too low. I took fairly high supplements of them for 5 years on the advice of my GI specialist, and now am taking more moderate supplementation to see if the levels will be maintained in the normal range. No change in seizure activity during this time.

The rescue inhaler I have been using can cause both hypokalemia, and hypocalcemia, and I have felt strange lately as well, since I increased my dosage due to the heat and high dewpoints lately. I had some EMTs pay me a visit last night, it got so bad. Since both K and Ca are quite active ion channels; it only makes sense that a deficiency, or excess, can cause problems. I have been more seizure/tremor prone since I increased my dosage, and both are potential side effects of Albuterol, my inhaler.

I think AEDs work on the same principle. There are enough AEDs out there that can cause hypocalcemia, so I think Ca supplementaton is advisabe. Personally, certain mineral deficiencies can cause me big problems.
