March 26 Epilepsy Awareness Day

Well, I was thinking that I would love to support Epilepsy Awareness day this year by wearing purple and trying to get other staff at my school involved and try collecting donations etc. I also thought that i'd change my profile picture on facebook (there is a downloadable picture on Epilepsy Action Australia's website) at the end of February and at that time start posting daily quotes or tidbits of information about Epilepsy (eg. did you know that seizures can be divided into two major groups (generalised and partial) and that there are 40 different types of seizures. For more information on different seizure types visit http://www.epilepsy.org.au/epilepsy_explained2.asp#4)

Is anyone else going to be involved in this and if so what do you plan to do?

Yes, it was started by a young girl in Nova Scotia, Canada in 2008. She was 8 or 9 at the time. In 2009 it went global so it's a fairly new thing. Here in Australia I think there is also a national Epilepsy Awareness Week later in the year.

Hi Trinity,

I'm from Australia as well. Last year Australia had epilepsy Awareness Week in May. This year they decided to have it on 26 March to go with Purple Day.

I was on the radio last year for epilepsy awareness week talking about my epilepsy & how I was looking at having the surgery. I got a phone call earlier in December from the media person at Epilepsy Foundation Vic (I'm a client with them) to see if I was interested in being interviewed on the radio again. Unfortunately I can't the interview this time as I am having the surgery on 10 March so will still be in Melbourne recovering from the surgery.

Here in the U.S., I don't think there's one particular day (although I could be wrong), but November is Epilepsy Awareness Month. And we do the purple ribbon thing then.

Also in the US, we have a "National Walk for Epilepsy" in Washington DC at the Capital. This year it is on Sunday, March 27th. Several regional support events are scheduled around the same time.

I will be in Washington DC for the walk again this year. I was there 2 years ago and it was an inspirational trip. I met Tinasmom and her family while I was there.

Hope lots of you are able to attend local events and maybe some are able to attend in DC.

Epilepsy Awareness Day is a Global awareness day. If you check out this link http://www.purpleday.org/events.php you'll see there are a few listings for the US. I am sure that there would be a lot more local events that aren't listed there (maybe look in your local paper) or organise something yourself.
