Meds, Meds and more Meds!!

I have started my adventure/research to help my eight year old daughter become med free. I feel like..enough is enough. The doc keeps adding more and more meds and has never mentioned any alternatives. Thanks to Bernard and Robin, I see there are other routes. I have contacted two neurofeedback specialist in the area and I am waiting for a call back. What qualifications and training should I be looking for? Are there any good questions I should ask?

How do I decide what kind of special diet Tahya should go on? I never realized that food played such a big role in seizures. I have read the four that Bernard posted, but I would have no clue on what to choose. I have talked to the doc about the ketogenic diet and he said it wouldn't work for her. She is very skinny and can't afford to lose any weight. Are there any good books/info you can recommend?

I also read, via Robin, that vitamins play a big role. Once again, I need a book/info explaining this.

Thanks to everyone who has written or responded to this website....I have been learning soooo much. Sorry for so many questions, but I have to start somewhere. I want to do everything right and not rush into anything.

There is no magic bullet here. They all say almost the same things. Get the refined simple carbs out of the diet. Stick with natural organic foods. Increase the veggies, and some fruits. Take away cow dairy (casein), watch soy products because they can increase the estrogen levels, corn is a no-no as it is GMO. No High Fructose Corn Syrup. You will start to realize that the ketogenic isn't always the best choice for most people. There are other ways to get results. I have never had to limit my daughters intake of food, just the choices.

Vitamins - your best reference is your Google search. Also an abundance of info about vitamins is here on this site. You need to practice using the search feature here. Go to the tool bar and look for Search .. type in any word that you are interested in and VOILA you will be able to read to your hearts content. I read labels and I attempt to buy the best I can. Start with the brain support like a good Fish Oil and branch off from there. I talked with one mom that told me her daughter stopped having seizures when they increased her Fish Oil to 2000mg and also gave a good dose of Vit E.

Keep records, keep a calendar of when you begin something. Only start one vitamin or mineral at a time. This way you will know if there is a side effect or a positive reaction, what caused it. Problem with seizures is that they can be trigger by an accumulation or lack of something over time. Most likely this is why it is hard for Doctors to pinpoint the issues.

I know for a fact that I am deficient in magnesium. So I have been watching that in my daughter. I have increased it twice and twice she has been seizure free. These are the types of connections that are good to make. Do I really care if it is diet or vitamins or neurofeedback? NO.. I just want her to be seizure free. Some people challenge me that I am doing so many things that I won't know what is working... I DON'T CARE!

Or call up the EEG Institute and talk with Tami. Tell her I told you to call, and she will guide you as to what you should be looking for. She works for two of the pioneers of the industry. Rebecca is being treated by one of them. I am sure they can put you in touch with a practitioner near you. (not sure where that is...)

You have started at the best place. Just remember there will be those standing in your way to say that you are crazy and that you are doing harm to your daughter. You must believe that you know what is best, and that you simply would not do anything that would harm her. No one is in tune with her every breath like you are.

I think the GARD and LGIT are probably the easiest ones to experiment with on your own. You can always try one and see what happens.
