Exclamation Is my Dog Epileptic?

Ok so yall are going to think that I am nuts. A couple months ago, My friend came over to the house and we were taking our kids to the zoo. When she got to the my house my and I opened the door, my dog flew out the front door and went for a run. When he came back, the hair was sticking up on his back, his legs were stiff, I honestly thought someone had tazzed him. He was gone latterly a min, long enough for me to run back inside to get his leash, needless to came out of it and was fine. So the dog learned his lesson for running for the door.

Well then I started having seizures again about a month later. Last night I was having a sleepless night, gotta love the tomapax. It was about 1am and Harley the dog jumped up on the bed with me. My dog totally had a seizure. He wet the bed, I mean really freaked us out. My husband took me to a 24 hour emergency vet and yes the put my dog on dilantin. So I followed up with my vet this am, awaiting test results… Has anyone every experienced this?

Actually seizures among dogs aren't that uncommon. A friend of mine's dog had this same problem. And some of the nutritional approaches to preventing seizures that are being tried by humans (like the GARD diet) were first tested with by vets on dogs, and found to be helpful.

I used to do a lot of veterinary work and general animal care, and animals get mostly the same problems we do - epilepsy, diabetes, depression, anorexia etc.

It's not very uncommon really. So long as he's getting the treatment he should be fine.

Good luck!

*chuckle* Actually, yes, animals can have seizures too. We used to have a person who posted...dogtor J...who does research in epilepsy and works with animals if I remember correctly...

I wouldn't say they are connected. However, you might look at the ingredient list on his food label. You also might really sit and journal your nutritional intake as well.

Just an idea from what is working for us.

When I was a kid we had a Pekingese dog that had seizures. We ended up putting him down. My parents thought it was more important to pay for my med's.

well the dog is a part of the family. Infact I think of him as a third kid.... that is not an option. After his vet bill.. we are to far in the hole to have him put down. Form what I am reading I am going to change his diet and hopefuly the meds. will work. Its nice to know my nest friend is going through this with me, as cruel as that sounds...

doesnt sound cruel at all. Because you're there to help him too. Think of it this way...as an owner with E, you understand what he feels too. The fear and anxiety. And he knows how you feel...makes you the perfect support system for each other...just wish he could talk.
