Neurologist has sent me back to family doctor?

I was diagnosed with Complex partial seizures in 2006. After many EEGs, MRIs, a PET scan and adjusting meds, I thankfully have been seizure free since June 5, 1007. Almost two years!

My neurologist is sending a copy of my chart/records to my general practioner and told me that I will now just get my medication from him, and will not need to go back to him (the neurologist) unless I have any seizure activity. He said I won't need another MRI again unless seizure activity starts up. My first MRI showed scarring on my temporal lobe from seizure activity that was not previously treated/and I didn't have diagnosed.

Is this normal? Not that I don't mind, but don't neurologists still want to keep an eye on anyone diagnosed with epilepsy?

My son has never seen a neurologist at all, none around here. I think that it is understandable that you be sent to your doctor with all the neccasary paperwork after being seizure free for 2 years. He is still keeping an eye on you through your docs paper work and results and such. Plus you are to go back and see him when and if anything starts back up. You are still tucked under the neurologist's wing, not too worry

It does sound strange....I thought as long as you were getting meds for seizures, you needed to be under neurologist's care.
Congrats on being seizure free!

When I'm not having seizures or am stable on my medication (the longest time was 6 years), I still was requested to see my neurologist twice a year for updates. Otherwise, he just filled my Rx as requested.

Some health issues can be traced back to seizure medications. I would just request that my primary physiction read up on my medication so that s/he is able to determine any issues that pop up.

As Jaysmom said, the doctors should be sharing paperwork, so hopefully your neurologist will keep up to date on your progress.

It is normal for a neurologist to send you back to a PCP since you are seizure free- technically you're "cured" for now of your seizures- you still have Epilepsy but have no more seizures as of now. Your PCP can give you prescriptions and keep your meds going, check your levels and if you need to go back, he can give your neurologist a call.
I'm seeing a PCP right now even though I've had many seizures- but its since I moved back to TX/home. I cant seem to find a neurologist that accepts my insurance! Driving me crazy lol. Anyways good luck with everything and congratulations with seizure freedom- i hope to be at that point sometime..

No it is not unusual for a Neurologist to "surrender"
you back to the Primary Care Physician or General
Practitioner after a period of time - if the seizures
are controlled and/or you have been seizure-free
for a period of time.

I have underwent this phase many times, and you
can be assured they keep in touch with each other.
And if anything worsens or changes, then it would
be back to the Neurologist; other than that, the
Primary Care / General Practitioner will oversee all
things considering all the bases have been covered
and confirmed and you will be monitored under his/her
care. Since they are the "Main Doctors" of your
well being as I call them "Overseers" - the Specialists
are the ones whom he/she sends you out to be
evaluated and if treatment is necessary then it
would go on from there. That is their job and purpose,
to keep you fine tuned from the top of your head to
the soles of your feet.

Question

That sounds a little weird to me actually, my neurologist sees me between every 2 months to maybe 4 months depending on how I'm doing.
