Pain meds don't work

Pain meds don't work for me. When I have a seizure I'll have a horrible headache after. My neurologist gave me butal but it didn't seem to do a thing. I just lay there with an ice pack on my head till it goes away.

I've had back problems for years and the dr give me vicodin for it and it never worked. I started seeing a chiropractor for my back which has helped extreamly. I asked him about the pain meds and he said that some people have a higher tolerance for them than others do. It could also be because of the epilepsy too.

I don't abuse them, only take them when needed (which is maybe a few times a year), and how they were pescribed. I pretty much gave up on them when I realized they weren't doing anything for me.

I'm having a root canal later this week and I know it's going to hurt so is there anything that someone might suggest that I could talk to the dr about giving me?

I would wonder if the Butal might work because after a seizure your headache is neurological whereas the pain from a root canal is not.

It may not hurt too much. I have had three, and with two the pain was moderate and on the third it was minimal. On the one that was minimal, the dentist was very careful regarding keeping my mouth open without stress so he used a tiny block between my upper and lower teeth which helped with the after procedure jaw pain since I did not have to "work" at keeping my mouth open. Depending on which tooth maybe a little block might help you with the jaw stress too.

I only took one or two pain pills with the two with moderate pain and none with the minimal pain.

I'd forgotten to mention that I've had 2 root canals & I didn't use any painkillers at all.

I was terrified before the first one but the pain really wasn't too bad.

I've got a pretty high tolerance to pain, because of everything that I said about, that I've just learned to deal with it till it goes away.

I'm not worried about having the root canal, it doesn't scare me. I was just hoping that I might find something to help. Who knows, I may not even need it as you didn't epileric.

Thanks everyone!

I just wanted to comment that pain killers don't work for me very much, either. First with over-the-counter stuff, I can say that Anacin will get rid of my headaches. Sometimes Advil helps with menstrual cramps, but not completely and it takes up to 3 hours sometimes for it to start working. Tylenol does nothing. I had back spasms recently, to where I could hardly move, and I took some prescription strength Advil that I got the last time I had back spasms, and it didn't do anything.
Seven years ago, I had an ovarian cyst. It was really painful, and while I was in the hospital getting tests done to find out what the pain was coming from, they gave me Morphine. The only thing it did was give me a panic attack because I felt this crazy rushing floating feeling when they first administered it intravenously. My pain didn't decrease at all. I had surgery the next week, and they gave me pain pills afterward (I forgot what kind). I took them for the first day and they didn't do hardly anything so I just stopped taking them. Ugh, I was in a lot of pain.

Anyway, I hope you find something that works for you!
