phenobarbitol question

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been on phenobarbitol, and it affected your energy level, lethargy? My son has been on phenobarb since 12/07, and is very lethargic. He is globally delayed and I sometimes wonder if the Phenobarb is contributing. We came back from a neurology appt today and we are going to take him off phenobarb and start him on Keppra (He is also on Topomax.) I was just curious of peoples experiences.

Post Hi there!

I don't remember if we've spoken before or not......if we haven't, welcome to CWE!

Yes, I've used phenobarb before. For 17 years, as a matter of fact. I had to be taken off of it shortly after I arrived at college because I suddenly went toxic on both my meds here. Weird story, but at that time, YES, I had become quite lethargic, and unable to stand amongst other things. I was on Dilantin, too at the time. I don't remember the dosage of pheno, but Dilantin was 300 mg. My boss at the time had to physically carry me into a doctor's office, and then they put me in an ambulance and put me into the hospital. So, in answer to your question, it IS possible for the phenobarb to affect his energy level.........
