Hey all,

quick question. I know that some antihistamines and decongestants are no-nos for those with E on certain drugs.

Does anyone know if Sudafed PE is okay to use? It has Phenylephrine in it.

from wikipedia:
Patients with a history of epilepsy and on anticonvulsant medication should not take phenylephrine. The drug interaction might produce seizures.

I took that once (before I joined this forum) and I did have seizures.

last time I had taken sudafed was in march 2011. Right after I got reduced from two seizure medications down to one. I started having seizures and was told to not take it again. Prior to that, when I was on two seizure medications I took it all the time and had no problems. But again, being on two medications probably helped alot, when I was taken off the second one, it didnt help and the seizures came on. So I havnt taken it since.

well crap..

My ears have felt clogged for a week (aural fullness) and its driving me nuts. I don't have a cold or runny nose or anything but my doc still says it could be congestion or allergies just in my ears??

Is there any type of product that helps with this sort of thing that is seizure safe?

Ive been using nose spray for stuffyness, and I only use it at night so I can breath easier while sleeping. As for allergies, I can take Zyrtek, I dont think I spelled that right... but I take that and it doesnt interfer with my seizure medications. I also can take Benadryl. Ive picked up some of that and it helps too. My primary care dr prescribed me Flonase, which you have to get a prescription for, and I tried it once, and It felt like my throat was swelling up. I had alot of burning and pain when I swallowed. So I havnt taken it since. It was one of the severe side effects listed on the medication, so I didnt want anything bad to happen if I continued to take it.

i been taking nytol i know i should not but desperate times for sleep

Have you tried taking Melatonin to get to sleep? I was having troubles getting to sleep, so in January I asked my neuro about it and they recommend I try Melatonin. I picked me up a bottle of 3mg tablets and Ive taken those and its helped me sleep.

i spoke to a pharmacist who said I could take the regular sudafed, but to take the short acting one, not the 12 or 24 hour version. She said just take the normal one, without an antihistamine and I should be fine.

Not sure if she knows what she is talking about though..

Well, give it a shot! I spoke with our pharmacist here and said I was taking two anti seizure medications and it didnt do anything bad then, but it was when I was put down to one, is when it started to get ugly. She said it was probably because I had the two anti seizure drugs together, and now only having one, it lowers my seizures threshold too low, to cause seizures. So Ive just not taken it since then. But the allergy medications work good for me. So I stick with those for now.
