Topamax and hot flashes

Hello everyone and anyone.....

I am taking topamax now for about two weeks. I started having some serious hot flashes. It feels like my insides at the core are on fire then it spreads through the rest of my body. I guess it would be like menopause. I am only 39 and am not in menopause. I went to my neurologist today and he said that he never heard of topamax causing this. Anyone here have this happen? He suggested it be hormonal. To coincidental I think. Hmmmm? It is really bad at night. Wakes me every 15 min. My dose is 100mg a day. I am increased to 150mg starting tonight as well as increasing my nortriptyline to 50mg (migraines). It is so scary taking medications. Thanks for any help.....

Sheri

Hi Sheri--

Hot flashes are listed as a less common side effect of Topomax on its drug info site, so your doc was a little quick to rule it out. Sounds like it may be the culprit.

A good site to read other folks reactions is askapatient.com. You can search at the link below using "hot flashes" to see if other people have reported that side effect.

Hi Sheri!
My 16 year old daughter has been on Topomax for the past 3 years, and has recently had to increase the dose. She has also been complaining of feeling really hot from the inside out. I didn't even think about the Topomax, but I think that is probably what it is! It is not constant, but comes in waves every few weeks or so.
I will be asking the Neurologist about this.
Lisa

I hate Topamax! It didn't help my seizures at all, and it messed up my stomach. Before I was put on Topamax I could eat whatever I wanted and hardly ever got an upset stomach. Now, (after Topamax) I get pain in my stomach whenever I eat, no matter what it is.

I know!!! I am titrating down and am only taking 50mg right now. Got rid if most of those nasty side effects. And Yes! !! It really does bother my stomach. My doc always says he has never heard of that. When I decreases my dose the stomach ache decreased as well as the hit flashes but they are still here. Yes! Topamax sucks. How much are you taking? Also, I swear I am still having seizures although the damn EEG showed nothing! I hate topamax but am scared to start yet another drug. Next is depakote. Have You tried it?

Thank goodness I got taken off of it. But I'm still getting the pains when I eat. It's been 5 or 6 years since I was on it last.
