Well, I'm off for my second VEEG in four months. In the paperwork the doctors sent me, it sounds like they really want to try to trigger a seizure so they can find the cause of everything.

Not looking forward to this, but it's all in the name of getting better I guess!

Good luck -- I hope it produces helpful results!

Good luck to you, I hope they get the information they need this time!

I just got discharged today, and even though I was stuck in a bed for 5 days, I'm glad I went.

They found a lot of discharges that lasted between 1-10 seconds long, but I never had a full blown seizure which was a little disappointing. I had quite a few auras, but quite a few of them never really correlated with these discharges. I did ask the doctor about this, and he said that I could have had a discharge that was just too deep in the brain for the EEG to pick up or that it could be a non-epileptic event.

Ultimately, they took me off the zonisamide and are currently working Depakote in. Starting at 250 mg per day, slowly going up to 500. The chief epileptolgist had told me this morning that I do have generalized epilepsy which completely trumps what my neurologist down here in VA said.

In the end, both doctors up there had said that people with generalized epilepsy, with occasional non-epileptic events which apparently is relatively common. They also said that it's the hardest to work with, but I have finally gotten confirmation and clarification as to what exactly is going on.

They sound like experienced neuros and I'm glad you're finally getting good diagnostic and treatment advice. Good luck with the Depakote!

Quick update. With his nurse practitioner I saw yesterday, she went over the typed up review of the EEG with me. In their summary, they have concluded that this was a substantially abnormal EEG.

I'll be asking the actual doctor next month if this could be the root of my staring spells, since those are the most common type I have.
