Angry CP at walmart

I had a complex at walmart this morning. Around 6 I was walking out the store and te next thing I know someone is telling me an ambulance is on the way. I was out of it but could answer questions; but you know the groggy feeling you have after a seizure. The EM asked me questions I answered, some of them twice. I never consented to be transported; but I did not say NO either. I carry a note in my pocket or on a clipboard when ever I am out alone; "I am epileptic, call Frances Kelso, mother 293-****. DO NOT CALL AMBUALNCE, no oe found my note and I was too far out there to give it to any one. While I did not consent to be transported and even signed consent after arriving hospital, still in la la land. declinning transport in Polk County does not do any good unless you are able to fight. Two years ago I was transported despite protest. Any one else have experience like this?

My wife had the exact same thing happen. She was at WalMart and had a seizure. Likely a partial because she didn't have her normal tonic-clonic or some one would have noticed. She was with her sister when it happened. Apparently she took a Heath bar off the check out shelf and ate it on the spot, then tried to pay with her medical insurance card. After getting frustrated she ended up going in the restroom and tearing the hand towels into little pieces, obviously aggitated by the experience. Her sister finally got her into the car and she proceeded to call the check out lady a word I won't repeat and then threw the receipt out the window of the car.

By the time she got home I was a little freaked. On her t-c's the postictal is usually brief, 15 minutes or so. This one lasted for hours. I ended up calling 911 because I was a bit paniced. They came and like in your case asked all the questions. Since she was able to answer them (she was somewhat coherent) and didn't consent, they couldn't take her.

They left and told me that if she got violent or did anything to harm herself, to call back and they would take her against her will. Thankfully with in the next hour or so she continued to come back to her sense and her cognitive function came back.

It was scary for me. Because it was something new, I didn't know how to handle it. However, I'm thankful that things happened the way they did. The trip to the ER would only have been another long night waiting for meaningless tests and an IV to finish. You know, the usual.

I've heard of soooo many ppl. having seizures at Wal Mart lately or just feel weird, Personally, I think it has something to do with the lighting.
I either get a massive headache at Wal Mart or feel light headed.

I had my last grand mal seizure in the Wal Mart parking lot in my car just as I left the store.
I just started up my car and the seizure hit me. I thought I would just sit in my car and wait it out but the next thing I remember I was in an ambulance and also had my license taken away as a result.

Oh yeah...better yet, I once was in the post ic phase, and while the EMT was asking if I wanted to be transported he was nodding his head up and down...I was trying to track him with my eyes, so my head mirrored his movement...that counted as consent. Afterwards, I was pissed.

RanMan,
I agree with you about the lighting in WalMart. I make it a point to always wear my sunglasses when I'm in there; I too have had a seizure in WalMart, felt it coming on. My husband, who knows all the signs of my impending seizures, was with me and helped me. Now he doesn't let me go in without those sunglasses; looks really weird late at night! lol

My first incidence, before I knew they were seizures, was at a Walmart too. It hasn't happened since I've been on medication but I do definitely think it is the lighting.

I want to say for all of you that had seizures at Wal-mart I am sorry. I work there. As in you Kelso for any kind of medical problem they call the ambulance. They dont go through your pockets which is your personal property. They do that to be on the safe side. As for me since I work there they knew about my seizures. Every time I would have one they sent me home even if I said no. Which I didnt get made I just understood and went home. As in the lights of Wal-mart I have no idea. The lights never bugged me. I think it was more stress. Sorry to hear what happened.

It's not just the lights at WalMart that can trigger my seizures; I have to be careful at any of the "Big Box" stores as well as my supermarket. The lights don't bother me every time, but if I'm leaning toward a seizure, those lights will push me into one. I am very visually reactive anyway.

I'm the same way and have the same thing happen in Lowes. It has something to do with the overhead fluorescent lights. I think I'm going to get serious about getting some of those blue glass lenses that are supposed to help!

I've heard about those. I checked into them and found them totally out of my budget. So I wear the wraparound polarized grey sunglasses that go, cocoon-style, over my glasses. It's certainly better than nothing.

My 12 yr old daughter is very photosensitive. When her seizures were less controlled than they are now we would notice that she would slow down to a turtle's pace in Wal-Mart or Lowes (our 2 favorite shopping places). I believe it was the lights and the neurologist agreed. So the neurologist suggested tinting some regular non-prescription glasses blue to block out the specific color of light that bothers her. It only costs like $20 to dip them blue. Since she's been wearing the blue-tint glasses she has NO issues in those stores...What's more the school noticed an immediate difference in her pacing at school! Pretty amazing, right?

But wait...There's More! (LOL) She was feeling pretty full of herself one day at Lowes. I needed to go down the flourescent lighting aisle so I said, "Wait down here I'll come back in a minute." "Aww, Mom. You worry to much. I'll be fine." We disagreed but in the end I let her follow me down the aisle. I stood there for a just a minute or two and visibly I could see no seizure activity from her. I thought maybe she was right and that I was worrying for nothing but I didn't say so. About 15 minutes later, though, she admitted that did feel "out of it"...And then she said those magical words, "Mom, you were right!"

When the blue tint isn't doing the job completely she throws on a pair of polarized clip-ons and then she feels better. Gotta love the shades

Weird thing is though, I'm from Canada ~ Do they all use the same lighting?

The reason so many people get transported after a seizure is not only due to that ever famous word: "liability", but also due to the Duty To Act Law (for States that have it).
As someone with seizures all my life and knowing how the tick with me, so to say, yes, I'm a better judge of if I need to go to the E.R. However, as a licensed First Responder, I'm also well aware of what could happen if the E.M.T.'s make a wrong call. If there's ANY doubt in the LEAST if someone is fully into it enough to make a totally rational decision, for everyone's safety and liability, the E.R. physicians are the ones who must make the final determination as to coheriance.
