Rain Cloud Hospitals Suck!!

I mean seriously.

As if i had not had a bad enough week. I end up having a seizure, a memory lapse and whats worse, I spent three days in the hospital with really really bad food, being shown off like a zoo animal to med students, being woken up every hour or so for blood pressure and temp tests and two incompetent nurses who tried to talk me out of not getting my IV Pulled, but it was unable to hide the fact that the PA went through my vein and i was clearly in a bunch of pain.

Oh Add a doctor who told her 'boss' that i was an 'Interesting Case' and wanted to keep me for another few days.Thank god he decided for me to go home. Some people Im telling you.

(((((((( hugs ))))))))))

Welcome to the CLUB!

I've been told that, plus a "complex
case", a "complicated case" and a whole
lot of other things! I've had my fill!

And I've been to Hospitals where at
home, where I've done construction
work ... my own SAWDUST tasted
better! And some of the stuff they've
brought in (the food) ... I'm like

It makes you wonder --- "Has this
been tampered with? Am I supposed
to eat this slop? Is this really food?"

However if the IV was not inserted
right, and you were in a lot of pain
and the Nurses were not cooperating
and you could have requested for the
Charge Nurse, if the Charge Nurse
was not responsive, you could have
phoned for the Hospital Administrator
(they also act as Patient Advocates!
He/She will evaluate and determine
the issue - they are Medical Doctors,
and will check it out and give the
orders, and can override anything,
they are the higher up authority -
so remember this the next time
around) - they are ALWAYS there,
24/7/365 at all Hospitals even in
the ER's!

Very few people realize that Hospital
Administrators are also Patient
Advocates.

So sorry you had such a rough time!

I hear your pain. Stacy has had more than her fair share of hospital stays and horror stories.

I totally agree Tillikum. The food is horrible, and I swear, bedside manner is non-existent.

I am either lucky or weird

Though I know many, many people who have had awful experiences in the hospital, I have been lucky myself. It may be because when I am there, I tend to not worry about everything else that is stressing me. Either that or i am just a little weird.

Of course the food is usually iffy at best, but when I had my knee surgery (yes an old man playing basketball) several years ago, I was in one of those surgical hospitals and I got mesquite grilled chicken breasts.

LOL....I wish! Whenever I've been in the hospital, the meat (?) was usually something that vaguely resembled a cardboard box. The vegetable resembled boiled seaweed. And the potatoes could have been used to tile the floor.

well i know the food was alittle generic (lol) the eggs (if they were eggs) were not good at all. But thanks to hubby, i had him bringing me just bout everything..lol

As for the IV- My nurse who did the IV went to lunch so i was left with the back ups (and man were they idiots) My husband works for the hospital as security (Mount Sinai) so he came up and told the nurses that if they did not do something that he was going to get the administrator over (the administrator knows me and my hubby very well, he came to our wedding and even came to visit me during my stay for the surgery everyday to make sure i was okay.) The next thing I know here comes my nurse from her lunch to take out the iv appologizing, while the admin was already coming down the halls to see me.. nice to have some control.

But anyways Im glad I can vent here, i know most of you have had your share of horror stories. Thanks for the hugs.... hugs back to you too

Once when I went into the hospital, I was transported there from a different hospital by and ambulance so apparently they weren't really expecting me. But I was in my room[dungeon] and I heard whoever was in the hall say "Who the hell is she? Why is she here?"

That made me want to stay there...

Yeah I wasn't there very long at all. Probably 16 hours and most of it was nighttime. Thank the sweet Lord! They didn't have a very good television But the rest of the people were really pretty nice. Especially the doctors. I really liked them.

With only just one hospital visit under our belt I have to say we aren't pleased. We had no health insurance when my daughter had her tonic clonic. Once the hospital found that out they immediately scaled back their treatment of her. CT scan, EKG, bloodwork and out the door in less than 4 hours! The misdiagnosed her with Vasovagal Syncope (basic fainting). Within 5 minutes of the beginning of her follow up visit with her Doctor he was able to disagree with their assessment. He asked if anyone had looked into her eyes. I said no because all they had done was make her follow a pen light. He said one eye is noticably more dialated than the other. "That makes me seriously consider seizure activity. We need an EEG."

The really annoying thing...I have to go back to that hospital. It's the only facility within 125 miles of my home that has a Pediatric Neurologist. How can I trust a hospital who's emergency room doesn't even recognize seizure symptoms that a country doctor can? Or did they see the symptoms but choose not to give her comprehensive care due to the lack of insurance? Either way...I'm not thrilled with their "service". (BTW, daughter has insurance starting 4/1)

CJR - I wouldn't say it was due to your not having insurance. We do have insurance and thought we were going to the best facility for seizure disorders, and yet within 20 min. my daughter was diagnosed with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures. Made no connection to nutrition or hormones. We moved on to another facility that seems to be looking at the bigger picture.

Now when she is taken to the ER, when they hear Epilepsy, they nod their head and say follow up with your neurologist. Sign papers and out the door.

Some states have childrens health insurance programs. In PA, we have a Childrens' Health Insurance Program (a.k.a. CHIP). I'm not sure if those programs are available where you live or not, but it might be worthwhile researching them. COBRA is a program that allows you to continue an existing plan for approximately 18 months. It's less of a hassle if you have ID cards already made for you. My son has a plan based upon his current health habits (no smoking, no drinking,....) which costs much less than COBRA. He's too old to be covered under my insurance plan.

Hospitals are short staffed and really cutting back on decent people. Just wait until we get national insurance.

Hopefully, your next stay at a hospital is much more recuperating than this one. The blood pressure and temp checks are done to see if you're running an infection. As for the food, I think they make breaded bread or something like that. Sometimes it simply looks like mystery food. Our one hospital here has a hidden cafeteria where a lot of the doctors eat which has really decent and healthy food. When the cafeteria at my college had mystery food, we tried to go out somewhere. I became anemic from a poor diet of college cafeteria food. My parents gave me extra money to occasionally go out to eat something decent.

Take care!

Most hospital do suck cause of teaching hospitals

rose,
It seems I am in and out of the hospitals more times than I can count on my fingers and toes twice. That is just in two month sthat has happened. And you better believe I hated it because half time they think you're crazy and they say you are crazy or stupid. And one time I was left in a hospital for a full month until they could figure out what was wrong with me! I've been through every test and used every alternate therapy. But, these hospitals are terrible so start making comments about the hospital there is a websites out there to that you can make reports about the hospital.

Sorry you didn't have a good experience. Hope you are feeling much better now! I have to say I have had some great Drs. and nurses and stays in the hospital. They aren't all bad and stupid. I don't think we can generalize. It is like any other profession. I had 2 surgeries last yr. and they went great. As great as surgery can go right? When my Mom died in April, it could not have been any better. They were truly wonderful, caring and helpful and I can't say enough about the Drs. and nurses and even the aids. I will be eternally grateful! Sure there are some rude, uncaring and inept people out there etc. some good, some bad..Hopefully more good than bad. And these people aren't God. Sometimes things aren't a quick fix and certain things need to be directed to the proper Drs. I am not saying I haven't come across some jerks/people that shouldn't be in their profession..I just try to judge each case individually. And I've had many hospital stays also..

Hospital food....

I have a VERY good reason for ensuring that during any hospital stays that i get my food brought in by friends...My ex-partner is the chef of the un-identifiyable slop that is served up! So not only does it look and taste like cardboard/plastic/cement, my plateful would probably contain poison as well We only have one hospital in our primary care trust area.

My hospital is great. My son calls it my home away from home. I know sad, but just like loudmouth said, I have food brought in. I'm in Seattle so family will go to a stand for me and get me some mexican food and an Iced coffee.Sometimes I can even bribe a nurse. I'm sorry about the stay though..Teresa
