Totally unrelated to E....

Okay...this year, I got to teach the second session of summer school. So far, I've stopped 3 fights (I'm only 5'3"....hubby was ticked I didn't call him.) and had one kid removed from my class. There's a girl that I'm supposed to be teaching geography, on top of the algebra and language arts I teach the rest of the class. Well, she informed me, that she was only here for Geography, that she doesn't like math (wants to be an RN though) and that I could only grade her on Geography. So over a week ago, I assigned her a 3 page handwritten paper on India. She didn't bother to do any research. I printed out info for her. Instead, she slept in my class for at least an hour a day. Today, the paper is due. She has to turn it in by 1 PM, and she's trying to get me to write it for her. I've read her all the info. All she has to do is summarize. She refuses. She thinks I'm being unfair and mean. I am sick and tired of kids that are lazy. Trust me, if this girl applied herself, she could do it....but she whines about every assignment I give. Arghhh!!! Yet another child that expects me to give them an A just because they sit there and breathe.

God forbid she actually manages to become an RN, which I seriously doubt.

If you do the work, you get the results....if you don't, well - you'll become a failure.

Sounds like this girl's gonna have to learn the hard way

Sounds like someone's got a rude awakening ahead of her. Unfortunately, some people have to learn the hard way.

It must be frustrating for you...it sounds like you genuinely care for your students. Just so you know, I learned the most from the 'mean' teachers.

LOL....I'm known as the "mean " teacher. But by the end of the year, I have kids calling me "mom" or "aunty". And I always have kids that come back after they graduate and tell me how they are doing, or ask for advice. So I really don't mind. I tell the kids at the beginning of the year that I will push them just as hard as if they were my own. That there is no such thing as a free lunch, and that the work habits they develop here will follow them into the workplace. (I sound like my mom more and more every year...) The thing that scares the BeeGee's out of me, is that I have so many students that have great dreams and goals, but no work ethic. Ah well, I have to remember that their education is their choice. And that all choices have consequences. Okay, I'm feeling better now. Thank you everybody for listening to my rant!

As long as you can say YOU tried, what else can you do ?

Just keep doing what you're doing.

Talking Ah, Skilly,

You KNOW you're doing what's right, so just keep it up. It's hard working with special needs kids. We both know that. Mine just graduated from high school, and now, he's headed to college, part-time (GULP).

But you still manage to do a WONDERFUL JOB, every day, day in, day out, even with your E. So, just keep doing it. They'll learn eventually. And we'll always be here for ya. No matter what. And if ya don't want to vent on the board, PM me. I'll listen.

Toodles!

M
