- Seizure Background
- Recent severe seizure (2/21/09) ...first ever for me. I have no history of epilepsy, but am still going through various doctor visits for determine cause of seizure. So far everyone ( medical ) is pointing their fingers at Celexa which I was on for depression / anxiety. My therapist's office started me on 20mg of Celexa per day for the first 6 mths of treatment....no effect, so they upped it to 40mg. Still not effect.... and, rather than trying another med, just kicked it up to 60 mg the beginning of last Nov 2008....less than one year after I first started taking it. By mid- Jan 2009 I was feeling great...doing TONS of projects at home and feeling like I was getting well. By mid-February I was in a complete manic state. My daughter called me the "Energizer bunny on steroids" becuase I was so hyper, talked so fast and so much, and couldn't sit still. I couldn't sleep, but I kept thinking I was just feeling very very good from being out of a very deep depression. Suddenly on 21 Feb in the late evening I just knew things were moving too fast...inside me...and asked to be taken to the hospital ER. Within 10 minutes of getting there, I was in a full blown seizure that I can't remember a bit of. It was so powerful that I even re-fractured an old fracture to one of my vertebrae. After leaving the ER, I was admitted in to the hospital and spent the next three days heavily sedated on lorazepam to keep the seizure under control. I have practically no memory of those three days and am still have some short term memory issues. I've been out two weeks. Neither my therapist (nor the psychiatrist in charge of that office) called or visited the hospital even though they were notified several times. Only after I have been discharged from 3 days did I get a brief call form the psychiatrict telling me to reduce my celexa from 60 mg per day to 40 mg. Now...I have a quite a few doctors appts to do...neurologist, primary care physician, etc....to help determine the cause fo the manic episode that lead to the seizure. So far it looks like Celexa is the cause. I saw your forum and it looked like a great place to learn something and share my experience. I'm scared to death of having another seizure of that magnitude and hoping that this can be diagnosed quickly. I also have lost my driving priviledges, so that is another 'side effect' of the episode. What a change this brought to me life..... though I feel like I survived a serious few days and have to look forward to a "second life' so to speak. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
