- Seizure Background
- I had a subdural abcess requiring an emergency operation to save my life as pressure had built up inside my brain that made me on the brink of being killed. The operation required drilling a hole in my skull to release the pressure. When drilling a scar was left on my brain. This scar is the site trigger for my epilepsy. I was uncontrolled from 1986 to 2003. Took various AEDS and was part of the UK human drug trial in 1991 for Lamotrigine. I was on (I realise the forum is based in US so my drug names may be different) Tegretol Retard (800mg per day) and Lamictal (600mg per day) for many years and had levelled out at four absences per day, 4-6 complex partials per week and 1 tonic-clonic every 4 - 6 weeks. A condition I could cope with. In May 2003, my consultant started me on 1000mg Keppra per day. All my seizures stopped apart from some complex partials on one day in July 2003. Then nothing until 26th November 2003 when I had a day of complex partials. Since then I have been seizure free. As you are aware, epilepsy is not cured just controlled and I have nigh on 30 years of coping with epilepsy. There are issues which I am concerned about such as long term use of AEDs - there are very few studies. Effects on older men. Memory and cognitive functions. I feel I can bring a lot to your forum.
