    Seizure Background
I was diagnosed with JME when I was around 15 years old. I was having Petite-Mal seizures while showering and for around 30 minutes after showering in the morning. These episodes would occur about once every two weeks and I would have around 7-10 small seizures (each seizure lasted less than 1 second) whenever I had them. It looked as if I was "dozing off". When I would fall or slip in the shower,...I would tell my mother that I had just fallen asleep b/c that is what I believed. She finally saw 3-4 of my seizures and, while it did appear as if I was just falling asleep, my mother thought different. We went to the doctor that day,...and my family practitioner diagnosed me with JME,..but referred me to a neurologist to make sure. The specialist confirmed the diagnosis after several sleep tests,...and placed me on Depakote.
Things were ok for around a year,...until I made the concious decision to not take my mediaction. I then suffered a grand mal seizure while on the way to school one morning. I am now 32 years old,..and have suffered only around 7-10 grand mal seizures since then and usually only when i forget to take my meds for an extended period of time. Fortunately,....every time I have suffered a grand mal seizure,...they are ALWAYS preceded by several (5-10) petite mal seizures. This is a blessing in that I have the ability to prepare for the grand mal.
