- Seizure Background
- Hi, my name is Olivia. I had my first seizure in september 2010, sophomore year of high school (16). It was tonic clonic and at first i thought it was just a one time thing. Then i was sent home from school because i had a whole bunch of myoclonic jerks. I was also sweating alot. Then I did something really stupid. My first EEG was normal so I decided to see if strobe lights would induce the myoclonic jerks that I have in the car. Well, it induced something. I woke to find my mom, dad, and 7 year old sister watching me. I had a tonic clonic seizure that lasted three minutes and i have now been diagnosed with epilepsy.
i have tonic clonics, simple partials, complex partials, absences, and nocturnals. my little sister calls my absence seizures "stare downs" and i call my complex partials "the scary feeling ones" lol because they feel horribly terrifying when they start.
i also have polycystic ovaries which i think has alot to do with the fact that i have left temperal lobe seizures... i think. but i can't be sure. last ultra sound showed 16 cysts on my right ovary and 14 on my left and my endocrinologist/gyn and my neuro seem to think there is a major connection.
As of February 2011, my dr changed my diagnosis. I do have juvenile myoclonic epilepsy but I also have partial seizures. He said they usually don't happen together and because I have ovary problems that influence hormones, I don't have many choices for meds. Right now I am on my third try on a med (lamictal) and we will see if that works.
June 2011 I was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosis. For a while we thought it could have been the cause of the epilepsy, but my new rheumatologist says the MRI does not support that. She also said I have fibromyalgia. It's kinda crazy how one thing happened in September 2010, I wasn't on any meds accept for ADD. Now I'm on 10 different meds for several different things.
That doctor in february was BS (excuse the language). I found a really amazing epileptologist in the Bronx who has helped me immensly. Im on depakote now and it's working aside from the partials. - Treatments

- My brother said to me; "it's not fair, epilepsy and then lupus all in the same year, what else is coming? and why is it happening to you?"
I said, "Everyone has crappy stuff to deal with in their life. The fact that it is all happening to me now, means that I won't have to deal with it later. I'm getting it over with."
