- Seizure Background
- I suffered from absence epilepsy all through my childhood. I was always very clumsy as a child, falling over and walking into stuff. I wasn't diagnosed until the age of eleven as although i often got told off for day dreaming at school I was also one of the more intelligent kids in my class as it was just assumed I was bored. I was only diagnosed after suffering two tonic-clonic seizures at the age of eleven.
At the age of fourteen I was told I had grown out of the episodes, as most kids with absence epilepsy do. However, when I started uni many of the new people I met commented that I often seemed to blank out a lot. I went to my GP who referred me back to the neuro department at the hospital. They told me that I still had the epilepsy and that I may never have actually grown out of it completely. Also that the reason I seemed to grow out of it, was probably that with it being stress triggered once I'd gone through puberty it appeared to settle down again.
Since then I've noticed black outs a few times. A few times I've been walking places and the journey is disjointed in my memories. Also I've crossed the road a few times and have no recollection of having done so. It's been scary at times.
For the last year I've been on new meds that seem to have more or less stopped seizures. Hopefully I wont become resistant to these ones or have any side effects like other ones I've been on. - Treatments
- Keppra (Leviteracetam) 1000mg twice a day. I also avoid places with flashing lights and lots of noise as they give me headaches
