- Hi, I have developed catamenial epilepsy during perimenopause. I was losing my memory more and more over a few years then it climaxed in a big nocturnal seizure. I agree with the mention here of the school of the internet. The various drs did scans etc which was good and many blood tests but all were normal so I was sent on my way. I researched the internet and various forums like this until I finally found a doctor that would listen and treat me for hypothyroid. However, my symptoms continued to worsen and I had two more nocturnal catamenial seizures exactly on ovulation in the last two months. I then researched that subject again and went back to Dr and discussed it with him he listened and put me on progesterone for estrogen dominance (that can mimic hypothyroid without showing up on blood tests (I read)). I have also read of the connection between progesterone and seizures and so am now on a small amount of (bioidentical) cream/day. The next neuro I went to didn't seem to be too cluey on catamenial epilepsy and told me I should now take Tegretol, (despite being on the progesterone). However I hesitate, and would like to try the progesterone for a few months first. I hesitate bcz I don't want to take a drug just because it's done and bcz I've read catamenial epilepsy can happen because of sudden drop/rise of hormones levels and progesterone may help that. Also I have read Tegretol and other anti-epileptic medications can have nasty side effects too and they counteract hormonal therapy like the progesterone I'm taking. I am also interested if there is a good doctor in NSW who is open to (up with) all this if anyone knows I'd really appreciate hearing!!! THANKS for this group!
Warmest regards, Janette
