- Seizure Background
- I was diagnosed. 19 yrs. ago. I am now 59 yrs. old. Married to a highly intelligent high school teacher who is not supportive of epilepsy or any of my several other health conditions.
I am mother of two grown children and by my daughter am a grandmother of 3 children 6 and under. I will soon have another (5 yr. old step grandson) with the marriage of my son. Of course I will treat him exactly the same.
After my diagnosis I was in and out of the hospital/hookup several times and never had a seizure there, except for one when I had just been unhooked and the intern said she could tell it was not a true one. My outpatient EEG’s were both positive and negative.
The ultimate validation of epilepsy was 12 yrs. ago, when I was off my meds and had a grid directly on my brain and probes stuck in it. It took three days but then I had 3 seizures in a row which the surgeon said lit up like a Christmas tree. They proceeded to take out my right temporal lobe.
Now I am confused very easily. I, seem unable to think at times, can’t find words and loose thoughts in the middle, have the intellect of a grade-school-er, get lost easily(even-in my small home town or a store.)
Due to removal of RTL I only recognize people I have known a long time and were significant to me, I have extremely poor balance a lot of the time. I use a cane or a walker if I am outside my house. etc. etc.
I graduated from college with honors and now feel stupid. I have extremely poor memory (both short and long term)
I have had every type of seizure; I have gone through several neurologists as they have moved in and out of town. I have been put on every anti-consultant available but have never had my seizures under full control.
Several years ago my Dr. told me I was having both epileptic and non epileptic seizures (NES). With additional counseling they went away for years but now have been coming back some. - Treatments
