- Seizure Background
- I have had Epilepsy all my life. I was born with hip dysplasia, anemia and epilepsy. It has been a hard road, and medication changes many. My mother had tried to deny my epilepsy by saying it was just a reaction to the pain medication they gave me as a child. I wore corrective braces for my hips and feet until I reached the age of 5. She said the doctors told her the seizures would "go away" when I got older. I was on phenobarbital from 1 week old until I was 6. I hid my seizure activity until I was in my late teens when it began to interfere with my jobs. I went to a neurologist (that I still have today) and was told that medication would help me reduce my seizure activity so I could maintain a good job. It worked until I had a major episode at work and was hospitalized for a day. I was told when I returned to work that they were "phasing-out" my position and "down-sizing" the office. I was the VP's personal secretary. I had worked there for 6 years and my employer was aware of my condition before he hired me. After that I began working for doctors as they have more compassion for people like us. I have not held a full time job in 7 years. My current employer keeps in contact with my neurologist weekly and lets her know of my seizure activity in the office. I am currently working only 10 hours a week. (I was working 25). Employers are not to keen on having a liability in their office. Thankfully I have a compassionate boss.
