Zonisamide is an antiepileptic medication that is primarily used to treat epilepsy and seizures. Like any other medication, it can have potential side effects. The most common side effects reported with zonisamide include:

1. Drowsiness or sedation: Zonisamide can cause drowsiness, especially when starting or increasing the dosage. This can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

2. Dizziness or lightheadedness: Some individuals may experience a feeling of dizziness or lightheadedness when taking zonisamide.

3. Loss of appetite: Zonisamide can reduce appetite, which may result in weight loss. It is important to monitor your body weight while taking this medication, as significant weight loss can have negative consequences.

4. Nausea or upset stomach: Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort may occur. Taking zonisamide with food or dividing the dosage can help alleviate these symptoms.

5. Cognitive effects: Some individuals may experience cognitive effects such as difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or confusion. These effects are generally mild and tend to improve over time.

6. Mood changes: Zonisamide has been associated with mood changes, including depression or irritability. If you notice any significant changes in your mood or emotions while taking this medication, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider.

7. Kidney stones: Zonisamide may increase the risk of developing kidney stones, especially in people with a history of this condition. It is crucial to stay adequately hydrated while taking zonisamide to help reduce the risk.

It is worth noting that not everyone will experience these side effects, and some individuals may experience other less common side effects. It is essential to consult with your doctor if you have concerns about the side effects of zonisamide or if you experience any new or bothersome symptoms.

Hi. I've been on Zonisamide for a couple of years now and the memory issues are still there. I had to switch to it when our insurance company changed. I was previously taking 400MG Vimpat/day at the time (along with 400MG Topiramate). Our new insurance company would have required us to pay out-of-pocket for the Vimpat--a $1600/month cost!! Because of taking Topamax/Topiramate for as long as I did, I'm VERY used to drinking lots of liquids during the day.
