I was diagnosed with E in 2003 after 18 years of wondering what was wrong with me. Head injury in 1985. I hope to find some answers here.

Thanks

Welcome

Hi Dor,

You'll find lots of answers here! There are a great group of people and I've had E since around 2002 from a head injury as well. Welcome!

Hi, Dor!

Welcome to CWE. I'm so glad you found this place. When I was first diagnosed the folks in here pretty much saved me, by sharing knowlege and telling me all that stuff the doctors never did.

I didn't know what was wrong with me for a long time, too. At first it only happened a couple of times a year so I ignored it for years. Then before I knew it seizures were several times a day. I have temporal lobe epilepsy, and that feels crazy, so I thought I was going crazy. After several misdiagnoses by regular doctors and neurologists, a seizure specialist (epi) finally told me what was going on.

I've had several head injuries, too. My first was when I was about 5 years old, and more since ranging from little bumps to concussions to losing conciousness. (Sports!) I'm pretty convinced it had something to do with my seizures.

How are you doing on your meds, and what are you taking?

Thanks all, I appreciate your welcomes.
A bit more about me...I was married to a violent man which resulted in 2 skull fractures in 2 weeks. As I said, I went for 18 years wondering what the heck was wrong with me. People would mostly think I was an 'attention wanter', nothing legit. I had a GM at work in '03. 20 minutes after driving to work in heavy traffic in a 1/2 ton 4 wheel drive, stick shift truck. I get creeped (sp) out when I think of what could have happened.

I was diagnosed w/ TLE after they finally found damage in my LTL. Every 2 or 3 months I have what I call a 'Seizure Week' where I have SP's and maybe a CP pr 2. No rhyme or reason. Just 'cuz.

I take no meds, nothing worked but I suppose it is time to look for a Doc again.
Thanks for listening.

Dor,

I'm so sorry to hear about your head injuries. Did I read right? He's your EX husband now, right? Is he doing jail time? He should be in jail forever for doing that to you.

Head injuries are a major cause of seizures. And a bunch of other stuff, too. Some studies show that 30% the people with head injuries develop seizures. This link is a lawyer's site. I usually take those with a huge grain of salt. But this one is a good one. He cites his sources: http://www.braininjury.com/seizuresandheadinjury.html

The one misleading statistic he gives is that 80% of people with epilepsy show positive eeg results. Other more specific sources say 40% of people with temporal lobe epilepsy do not have positive eeg results.

Here's an article with the odds of developing seizures for specific types of brain injuries: http://www.braininjury.com/research.html

Please do look for another doctor. There is some risk that without medication your seizures might get worse over time. I'm not one to lecture about this because I'm going off my meds. But I think you deserve to make an informed choice about what you want to do. At the very least get help for your head injury.
