Hello my name is Jimmy. I had my first seizure at 18 months old. I've had partial and tonic-clonic seizures my whole life. I was recently diagnosed with left temporal medial sclerosis. My doctor wants me to consider having a temporal lobectamy. He says that there is a very good chance I'll never have another seizure again if I have it done. I was wondering if anyone else had done it and what their experience was with surgery. I'm a little scared of surgery . I've taken different drugs throughout my life from phinabarbatal to Dilantin to tegratol to now I'm on oxcarbazepime and keppra. I'm not thrilled with surgery but a week ago my wife had to call 911 two times in one night. Both seizures lasted about 15 minutes and I chewed my tongue into hamburger. So now I'm seriously considering the surgery. I would appreciate any ones feedback that's been in similar situation. Thank you very much.

Hi, Jimmy and welcome to CWE!
I have never had brain surgery, but several members here have. Some have had successful surgery and some have had only partial success, but I don't know the specifics on the types of surgeries. I'm sure some of these people will respond soon. Good luck in reaching your decision!

Have mooch around site I only assuming Bernard can lift the answers on here..being computer illiterate myself .

Hi Jimmy --

It can be difficult to guarantee a seizure-free outcome from brain surgery, so I would be a bit wary of your doctor's advice. Some folks become seizure-free, some continue to have seizures but fewer of them, some eventually require an additional surgery. Most need to continue on anti-seizure medication. Below are a few threads by CWE members discussing their surgeries and the results.

My Heart goes out to you first off . Please Pray . Prayer will Strengthen you . After all you've gone through , you don't want any frequency to increase . Maybe the surgery is the way to go . My brother who has Parkinson's had Surgery and has no more shaking of the hands . I know that it is a Scary Issue to consider this , do your Homework get 2nd , 3rd and 4th opinions . If it's a complete success , you're Seizure Free . Learn All that you can about both sides of the coin and how life on either side would be . You will be in my Prayers Jimmy .
