Hello, I am new here and at the moment I am not yet diagnosed but found this forum very useful and can relate to a lot of the stories.

For over 8 years I have suffered with what i thought were 'night terrors' waking up in the middle of the night with a sharp intake of breathe in a panic. Sometimes I scream and shout and am terrified of various things that i think i can see, ie animals, spiders, people breaking in to my house etc etc. I dont sleep walk but after a few minutes of the feeling of fear and my heart racing I realise it wasnt real I usually go straight back to sleep.

My boyfriend tells me i do this between once and three times a night - sometimes more and I barely remember a thing. quite often I wake up covered in sweat and I nearly always drool every night, sometimes I have to get up and wash my face theres so much drool. Sometimes the inside of my mouth is swollen because I have bitten my cheek.

I went to my doctor and he has referred me to a sleep clinic and my first appointment with the specialist is in a couple of weeks.

I just wondered if anyone has an opinion on what I have experienced?

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Miss Chiz, welcome to CWE!

Strange behavior during sleep can be one symptom of nocturnal seizures -- though it can also be a sign of "night terrors", as you mention. The sleep study should definitely help shed some light.

Do you have any daytime symptoms? Sleepiness during the day, migraines, etc.? Those can help point towards one diagnosis or another. Have you tried any treatments for your symptoms? You might consider adding a magnesium supplement to see if it helps -- magnesium plays a neuroprotective function, and can help some folks relax more at night.

Best,

Thanks for the reply,

I havent tried any medication, a doctor tried to give me anti-depressants but she wasnt a very good doctor, didnt listen to me and i think she just wanted rid of because she never understood. I never did take the medication she gave me.

I have some symptoms during the day, most mornings I find it hard to get out of bed and it takes a few hours for this sort of dull ache around my head and face to go away. My eyes are usually sore from being dry as my boyfriend tells me he often finds me sleeping with my eyes wide open. I find it hard to shake the tiredness off even up to lunch time. My muscles can ache as if i've been to the gym too, particularly my back.

I cant wait to be seen at the sleep clinic as I feel that no one has ever listened to me properly before. One doctor even googled my symptoms which did not fill me with confidence.
