I've been watching the coverage of this storm today. I can't imagine being in New Orleans right now.

Several years ago on the Discovery Channel they had a show about hurricanes and they talked about something like this in New Orleans happening. I thought most of it was pretty fictional at the time.

Prayers for those poor souls left behind. They say 100,000 people are trapped in New Orleans 'cause they didn't have cars or were finanacially unable to leave. I've heard reports that the death toll is going to be 1/2 that.

I hope it's all wrong.

This beast looks like Camile. That was a NASTY huricane. It wiped out Gulfport Miss. Daddy and my brother-in-law had taken supplies donated from the church to the area. They had taken the movie camers and the shots they brought back were awful. All the homes facing the ocean were gone, just concrete slabs and steps remained. Ocean tankers were sitting on the highway, enormous piles of debris, clothes hanging from the few trees. So much devistation!

This storm looks like it will be a copy of Camile. I lived in florida for over 20 years and saw some of the worst storms, Donna, Cleo, Camile. When I flew to and from my mothers funeral in July, I had to fly through 2 different hurricanes Dennis, and Emily. I am so glad I moved out of that state. I don't mind the rain or the flooding but I hate the wind and tornados.

Katrina is making landfall right now. She is down to Cat 4 / 145 mph winds. So far, I haven't heard any reports about the storm surge overcoming the levies in NOLA.

It looks like a major portion of NOLA may have really dodged yet another hurricane. There is still some areas underwater...for blocks and blocks. It sounds like Mississippi got hit the worst.

Mississippi certainly was hit worse - the death toll at last count was at 80. Wouldn't want to be in New Orleans either. I have a long time friend who lives there and she's probably in the Superdome due to lack of money. I will be glad when I hear from her and know that she is okay.

My brother and his wife are moving to Boloxie, Miss. He sold his house which closes on the 15th finished out the lease on his business and has most of their things packed and ready to go. They were suppose to be there today to go house hunting!

They don't know what they are going to do now. They don't even know if the area they hoped to buy in is still there.

Well my bother won't be moving to Biloxie. There just isn't anything left. But he is still moving.

How utterly scary.

It could be worse... he could have just finished moving...

With your permission, Bernard,

Some folks just don't know where to turn for help.

The devistaion is much more than anyone could imagine. So many without homes, too many dead/dying.

This will be an economic factor to test the American strength greater than the Trade Towers attack. We are vulnerable at present. Let's not forget that.

Thanks for the link BB.

Here in the Houston area, we are getting a ton of NOLA transplants. The Astrodome is nearly full and more folks are coming. Business are relocating here and the port is picking up NOLA traffic. Houston's infrastructure is going to be taxed (no pun) trying to support the transplants.

LA kids are being enrolled in Houston high schools. According to the paper this morning, Rice U. and U. of Houston are working to admit all the transplanted Tulane U. students.

We dropped off a bunch of donations at the local church.

Thank you Bernard!

The casinos are sending their workers here and putting them up in their own hotels. Don't know how many people we are talking about here, but that will definately have an impact on our own employment here. We have so many illegals here and now diplaced NOLA coming in somthings gotta give. The pay scale is very diferent here. The wages for casino workers is not all that much

Rita

Looks like we are projected to get a direct hit from Rita. I hope she is much gentler than Katrina!

Better get yer waders out. This one looks kind of odd. It may get to be a big like they say. If you lose your house you are welcome stay with us!

They are issuing a mandatory evacuation for Friendswood. I'm taking the family to stay with friends in Dallas.

I heard about the strengthening of Rita and the evacuation of parts of Texas on the radio this morning. Hope that you manage to stay out of her way!

We made the normally 4-5 hour trip to Dallas in just under 9 hours - and we were lucky. We know folks who left one hour after we did and didn't arrive in Dallas until 3am (~ 7 hours after us)! Traffic was crazy.

As of the moment, it looks like the eye will hit Galveston which means a direct hit on our home. If it turns a little bit more to the north, we should be spared either a direct hit or the storm's NE quadrant (which would be a BLESSING). I've also read that the storm is now weakening and expected to make landfall at Cat 3. I hope so.
