Music...it helps us get through tough days and there are songs that always make me smile and songs that really comfort me.
This morning I woke up with a really sappy one going through my head.
But it helped me get out of bed after the left side of my body gathered strength after what I can only imagine was a big one while I slept.

This is an old one and it has a super cheesy video.
It's a Peter Gabriel song that he sings with Kate Bush. "Don't Give Up"

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good

...

rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up

...
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing

I am a sentimental old fool at 36! It may be a mushy little song but it really soothed me! I'm even rolling my eyes at myself!
Tee hee.

Great number LJ-Bain,

me too, sentimental old fool at 47 :) (Ok way older, but still a great number)..

thanks for singing it...

47 is a great number. And it's just a coincidence that I happen to be 47 too...

great lyrics. great song. LJ.
as far as I can remember...and I am a 48 year old sentimental fool, music has been some kind of outlet and comfort for me. mushy sappy music. stay away from me music. cleaning the house music. dance like nobody's watching music.
don't roll your eyes at yourself...it helped you when you needed it.

here are lyrics that have been a comfort to me through some tough times and even now.

Go ahead and take your best shot,
Let 'er rip, give it all you've got,
I'm laid out on the floor, but I've been here before,
I may stumble, yeah I might fall,
Only human aren't we all?
I might lose my way, but hear me when I say,

I will stand back up,
You'll know just the moment when I've had enough,
Sometimes I'm afraid, and I don't feel that tough,
But I'll stand back up,

I've been beaten up and bruised,
I've been kicked right off my shoes,
Been down on my knees more times than you'd believe,
When the darkness tries to get me,
There's a light that just won't let me,
It might take my pride, and my tears may fill my eyes,
But I'll stand back up,

I've weathered all these storms,
But I just turn them into wind, so I can fly,
What don't kill you makes you stronger,
When I take my last breath,
That's when I'll just give up,

So, go ahead and take your best shot,
Let 'er rip, give it all you've got,
You might win this round but you can't keep me down,

'Cause I'll stand back up,
And you'll know just the moment when I've had enough,
Sometimes I'm afraid and I don't feel that tough,
But I'll stand back up.

I love the old songs.. one of my favorites that I would sing parts of :) to my kids and love to hum is SMILE

47 is a great number.. I remember, but so is 59.. maybe.

Smile tho' your heart is aching,
Smile even tho' it's breaking,
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by,

If you smile
thro' your fear and sorrow,
Smile and maybe tomorrow,
You'll see the sun come shin-ing thro' for you

Light up your face with gladness,
Hide ev-'ry trace of sadness,
Al -'tho a tear may be ever so near,

That's the time,
You must keep on trying,
Smile, what's the use of crying,
You'll find that life is still worth-while,

If you just smile...

I love the old songs....

That's the time,
You must keep on trying,
Smile, what's the use of crying,
You'll find that life is still worth-while,

If you just smile...

love this one.
it's playing over and over in my head now. :D

Everybody hurts - REM

But when I need the song, I always listen to the Corrs' cover.

When your day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries n everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
If you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

This song isn't sappy or sentimental, but definitely could be called a bit cheesy or corny. And even though it's about a no good boyfriend, it really seems to fit the way I try to look at my brain tumor and the lovely epilepsy that accompanied it.

Here's some of "Fighter" by Christina Aguilera

After all you put me through
You'd think I'd despise you
But in the end I wanna thank you
'Cause you made that much stronger

*****
*****
After all of the stealing and cheating
You probably think that
I hold resentment for you
But uh uh, oh no, you're wrong

'Cause if it wasn't for all
That you tried to do
I wouldn't know just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you

'Cause it
Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
Makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter

Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

I had never heard that Sugarland song before and the lyrics are sensational! Thanks for sharing that! It's like you just gave me a gift with really pretty wrapping paper!
I LOVE that REM tune
and the Smile song is just the sweetest thing. It's going through my head too.
Thanks guys! I was so hoping people would share their favourites so thanks for not disappointing!
I'm also glad I'm not the only sentimental old fool around here! But we're all young at heart, right?
Love the "Fighter" song addition! Cheesy and corny count too! Plus she can really belt out a song.

I find comfort in this as well. I don't know why. Maybe an echo from my childhood?

Movin' Right Along - Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear

Movin' right along in search of good times and good news,
With good friends you can't lose,
This could become a habit!
Opportunity knocks once let's reach out and grab it (yeah!),
Together we'll nab it,
We'll hitchhike, bus or yellow cab it!
(Cab it?)

Movin' right along.
Footloose and fancy-free.
Getting there is half the fun; come share it with me.
Moving right along (doog-a-doon doog-a-doon).
We'll learn to share the load.
We don't need a map to keep this show on the road.

(Hey, that song is sounding better Fozzie.)

Movin' right along,
We've found a life on the highway.
And your way is my way,
So trust my navigation.

California here we come, the pie-in-the-sky-land.
Palm trees, and warm sand.
Though sadly we just left Rhode Island.
(We did what?!)
(Just forget it.)

Movin' right along (doog-a-doon doog-a-doon).
Hey LA, where've you gone?
Send someone to fetch us, were in Sasketchewan!

Movin' right along (doog-a-doon doog-a-doon).
You take it, you know best.
Hey, I've never seen the sun come up in the West?

Movin' right along.
We're truly birds of a feather,
We're in this together and we know where we're going.
Movie stars with flashy cars and life with the top down.
We're storming the big town,
(Yeah, Storm is right should it be snowing?)
(Uh, no I don't think so...)

Movin' right along,
Do I see signs of men?
Yeah, "welcome" on the same post that says "come back again."
Moving right along, nice town!
Footloose and fancy-free,
You're ready for the big time...
Is it ready for me?

Movin' right along,
Movin' right along,
Movin' right along,
Movin' right along.

Oh my goodness! Kermit the Frog! That's AWESOME!!!!!
I always picture him singing the song "Why are there so many, songs about rainbows? And what's on the other side..."
Just picturing Kermit made me smile. Fozzie Bear was always my absolute favourite. Well, and beeker too with the Swedish Chef and the 2 hecklers in the stands who were hawks or something.

See? Just thinking about the song makes everyone smile. What greater comfort can there be?

:D

Fighter is powerful. and Kermit made me giggle. :D

You are so welcome, LJ. I'm glad it made you feel so good! :D
Sugarland is my all time favorite..I think i know all their songs by heart. Almost every one of their songs just touches you...well me. :)

Hi all: Just a little trivia on SMILE.... it was written by Charlie Chaplin which I think makes it even better... who else used to imitate Charlie Chaplin's walk? LOL... I am so aging myself.. but I am not quite silent movie old ;)

I love them all. Thanks everyone. My kid's had a Fozzie bear puppet and I loved "talking" to them oh so many years ago.

Ah, a lot of great songs, but "Movin' Right Along" definitely puts a smile on my face. :)

Not quite the same but my daughter had to go back to work last night for the first time since she was there post-ictal (they thought she had a hangover) and was very nervous about it. I gave her this quote from The Help as a mantra:

"You is kind, you is smart, you is important."

Sounds silly but I really think it helped.

Pls dont roll your eyes on this song....the message is so stong..i dont know the song but the lyrics are great!
thnx for sharing
