Hi, I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the natural alternative called samE used for depression? I take 1200 mgs of Trileptal a day and I am sluggish, depressed, starving, zomby like, hopeless, I have complete DEPRESSION. I was wondering if anyone has had any success/interactions with sam-E?

I have a friend who took it and said it was great and started working right away, but she does not have a seizure disorder or is she on any AEDS.

My psych says okay, now I am waiting for the neuro....lets see what happens, she hates me after what i put her through while I was on Keppra. (oops, didnt know I had that kinda rage in me)

Thank you so much!!!

Have a gr8 day!!!

I tried it once & had no benefit from it, if anything it made my seizures worse.

Research has told me there's really no use for this supplement.

7. S-adenosyl methionine (SAM-e)

SAM-e is a chemical which occurs throughout the body and has a fascinating array of in vivo functions and in vitro effects. In humans, it is marketed for use in depression and arthritis, and a variety of other conditions. The clinical trial evidence is mixed and not generally high quality (for example, Cochrane Reviews for arthritis and alcoholic liver disease, Mayo Clinic summary for various conditions).

In pets it is primarily promoted as protecting the liver from damage due to disease of toxins, often in combination with Milk Thistle, though its use for arthritis and other conditions is also sometimes recommended. While the theoretical arguments for these uses, especially in the case of liver disease, are plausible, there is virtually no clinical research that the compound actually benefits patients when given as an oral supplement. There is one study which found no significant benefit in preventing liver changes associated with steroid use, one case report claiming some possible benefit in a dog with acetaminophen toxicosis, and one clinical study that suggest some possible value in treating age-related cognitive dysfunction in dogs. And despite how widely used this supplement is, and how sweeping the claims made for it often are, that’s about it.

This study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16021987 concludes that SAM-e can help with depression, but there are a lot of unknowns about how it works. Generally it's effective when B-Vitamins are present , so you might consider taking it with a B-Complex supplement. Before taking anything though, check with your doctor first.

Of interest:
In this study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19149418 SAM-e reduced seizures, but it was a very particular kind of seizure in a very particular mouse.

This study http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v287/n5780/abs/287357a0.html http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16021987 SAM-e plays a role in regulating aspartate, one of the neurotransmitters that can over-excite the brain.

Excellent preliminary study. Hopefully more research will be done to follow up.

Here's a more in depth description of that study. It is also a good preliminary study but even they say that it should not be taken to mean much until it has been researched in more depth. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2710759/
Because we did not maintain as controls a cohort of mice that did not receive SAM, our findings must be interpreted with caution. However, our intent was to alleviate seizures in our mouse colony rather than to conduct a study of the efficacy of SAM on seizures. Such a study could be conducted in other mouse strains

sAY NO TO THE SAM-E

Well, I have been on the Sam-e just 200mgs for about a week and if anything I have more social anxiety and general anxiety, vivid SCARY DREAMS- one of me having huge sores all over my body and as I ran in terror for help, I started losing body parts, awful! (DREAM)
7lbs weight gain in 1 week
distended stomach - gross
periods too close together, on a 15 day cycle---not okay for a 30 something....please just some relief!!!!

ANY RECCOMENDATIONS? I have been on tegretol (worked for 18years) keppra for yr and a half, just weened off of 200 mgs zonegran.

Since it has only been a week I am not sure if I should continue or not, my psych. said stop and go on effexor, but the side effects seem AWFUL!!

Sorry for the whining, but I feel like i am at my wits end with all of these mood swings, nonemployment, sluggishnesh, I dont even want to leave the house.

This is not me, contrary to what my neurologist (whose known me for 1 year) says, she says this is just my personality and I need to go on an antidepressant.

Any natural alternatives??? Ive tried neurofeedback, but I am not sure it is anymore helpful than meditatin. Thanks again for allowing my rant and rave, just sick of not feeling like leaving the house.

:(

Vit. B6 does help some people with Keppra side-effects. Have you tried it yet?

Remember that when listing side-effects they have to list everything no matter how unlikely that side-effect is. Also, remember you don't know what side-effects will effect you until you try it. Even Aspirin, which most people have no trouble with has 3 pages of side-effects.

Yes I take a multitude of vitamins,
Bdefinitely helps with numbness in hands and fingers. Feeling pretty good today, probably has more to do with the moon becoming full, always feel great when a full moon is approaching and during full moon. go figure :))
