This kind of thing makes me imagine sci-fi scenarios where the government manipulates what we remember and what we forget...

I can understand about needing to forget trivial stuff that would otherwise just clog you up. Could a lack of this chemical/cell type be what causes rare people to have eidetic memories?
 
With me I seem to remember most every little thing, and it drives my dh crazy.
I had one person tell me I needed to loose my good memory.

Every since I came off Dilantin my memory improved 90%. and that was 14 years ago when I was 36 years old.
