Yesterday before leaving work I had a strong feeling that I had to urinate. I didn't think much of it until I went to the bathroom. Well, not much came out and it burned. I thought, well that is weird. As soon as I pulled my pants up I had the feeling that I had to go again so I did. Not much came out and what did it burned. I told my husband we have to get home and quickly that I suspected something was wrong. Sure enough as soon as we got into the car I had a seizure. I came to and still had the strong feeling that I had to urinate and felt as if my bladder was going to burst at any moment even though I went before we left work. I was crossing my legs and dancing in the seat looking like an ape or something. When I got home I went to the bathroom again and still not much came out and it still burned. Then I walked out of the bathroom to change clothes and fell out on the floor with another seizure. I have never had a seizure like this one before. It was a terrible night. Has anyone experienced this? I guess I am lucky I did not loose my bladder on myself I have heard of that happening with generalized seizures but my seizures are more of complex partials that can generalize (which the one I had later a home did generalize according to my husband). After the seizures were gone the burning feeling left and so did the intense urination feeling. Weird?!:ponder:

Infections (including UTIs) can trigger seizures if you already have a lower seizure threshold. (It's happened to me). Maybe that's what happened in your case. Even though the burning feeling is gone, I recommend that you drink plenty of water, and try drinking cranberry juice with a small amount of baking soda in it.

I agree with Nakamova. My first tonic-clonic was brought on by a UTI (along with a lot of anxiety and stress). It does sound like you have got a UTI, with the wanting to go to the toilet but can't and the bit that does come out burns. Take lots of water and if it doesn't go away see your doctor. I hope you are feeling a bit better now. Take care. Debbie :p

Quote from a website:
"Not everyone with a UTI has symptoms, but most people get at least some symptoms. These may include a frequent urge to urinate and a painful, burning feeling in the area of the bladder or urethra during urination. It is not unusual to feel bad all over—tired, shaky, washed out—and to feel pain even when not urinating. Often women feel an uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone, and some men experience a fullness in the rectum. It is common for a person with a urinary infection to complain that, despite the urge to urinate, only a small amount of urine is passed. The urine itself may look milky or cloudy, even reddish if blood is present".

Thanks so much for the helpful replies but the funny thing is as soon as the seizures went away so did the burning and the need to urinate. Does that make any sense at all? I suspect it was a part of the seizure. I did not have this problem all day yesterday just when the seizure started and when it stopped the problem stopped. Just plain weird I tell you.

I have had plenty of of UTI's before but never like this. I had just seen my OB-GYN earlier in the day (no pelvic exam though just to talk about something) or else I would have said something to her. This was just a weird seizure I guess. I have been drinking plenty of water today just as a precaution and no burning and no urgency like yesterday so I just hope it was a fluke thing. If not I will call my doctor. Thanks again for the great advice.

There is a connection between the two. I would take this as a signal that you need to work on healing the organs involved. You might have your answer. There might be underlying infection or inflammation that is not detected or felt until it gets really bad.

I'm so glad I found Tam Bam's post, as I've had something very similar. I have had complex-partial (mostly nocturnal) seizures (catamenial when I was pre-menopausal) for over 40 years, but for the last couple of years I've terrible issues with the burning she mentions, although in my case it is RELIEVED when I urinate. It comes on when there is something stressful is going on -- which can be anything from interpersonal relationships or I think stormy weather -- and sticks around for a few days. It feels like I get rid of it when I have a seizure. The last few days it's been pretty bad, and believe it or not, I'm HOPING for a seizure to get it to stop.

I've been thoroughly checked by both an ob/gyn and kidney specialist. I had an intravenous pyelogram (IVP) and cytoscopy in 2000, both showing normal results. And I've had cat scans of my pelvic area, all normal.

So I do think it's neurological.

I'm so glad someone brought this up, Ive too embarrassed. When I feel I need to urinate I have strong auras. This has been happening to me for years. So weird.

Tam bam,

Interesting. I never put the two together. Over the past few years I kept on thinking I had a bladder infection, went to the doc, and everything was perfectly fine. I just labled it in my own head as an "irritable bladder." I have other bladder probems, too, that I didn't know was seizure related until I was on this forum, like my bladder suddenly just letting loose. No notice, no time to get anywhere appropriate for it. Once it was in the isle of the hardware store and I just blamed it on my poor little service dog. Now I know it's a seizure, because I can identify that icky pre-seizure feeling I get, and also notice when another type of SP or a CP follows it. But if I never went out when I feel an aura, I'd be a 100% shut-in.

I've had similar experience with just having the partials but on days where there were clusters . I wondered if the point of electrical activity was the area
in the brain that would control urine urge?

Dad

My 9 years old daughter had this seizure which lasted for approx 30 sec. We dint have any clue what it was. We rushed her to hospital in the middle of the night. We got all the tests done including EEG, blood tests etc. which were all fine.doctor has advised us to get a sleep deprived EEG done after 2 weeks. After reading this forum I can recall my daughter was complaining of urge to urinate but could not and had a burning sensation. Till one we were not correlating these problems till I read this forum posts. To my surprise my daughter was hospitalised for 2 day to get all these tests Done but doctors dint bring up this UTI issue nor we thought of it. Any suggestion? Kindly post.
Very useful posts I thank you all for your postings

Hi there, and welcome to CWE.

With a new seizure (rather than for someone with a past seizure history), the doctors are looking to first rule out primary causes such as toxins or brain infections, so the UTI probably seemed secondary and less relevant.

But given that those tests were all negative, it might be worth making a note of the possible UTI. Sometimes a UTI can be an indication of dehydration or some other digestive stress that could also be playng a role in triggering a seizure. I hope your daughter's episode turns out to be a one-off, but it doesn't hurt to pay close attention to all the circumstances leading up to her seizure -- and try to avoid them in the future.
